Welcome to the Whitby Swimming and the exciting world of swimming!

Whitby Swimming is a non-profit organization run by a board of directors and committees comprised of parent volunteers. Our swim programs are coached by professional coaches.

The club runs both a Pre-competitive (Swim Skills) program as well as a Competitive (youth, age group, senior) program.   We are not planning to run our precompetitive program this fall due to space limitations.  As pools re-open and restrictions ease we will hopefully be able to add our precompetitive program back.  Please see below for information on assessments for Fall 2021.

The coaching staff will be responsible for the group placement at the beginning of the year and for the group changes during the season. In order to find the most appropriate group for each swimmer, coaches will review five aspects: the ability to train, the skills, the attendance, the character and performances.

Please note that meeting standards do not guarantee group placement, all group placements are solely at the coach’s discretion.

Ability to Train

Before being placed in a new group, the swimmer must demonstrate that he or she will be able to handle the training load of the new group. The ability to meet the group standard is important for the self-image and confidence of the swimmer. If there is any doubt, the swimmer will be placed in a lower group with the opportunity to move up.

As the swimmer progresses, it is expected that he or she will be prepared to work on and master the finer points of stroke techniques, starts, turns and race strategy.

Swimming requires a commitment to practice schedules and meet participation. As a swimmer moves up the competitive ladder, there are more practices of longer duration. If a swimmer does not attend practice on a regular basis, he or she is less able to improve performance.

While swimming performance is expected to improve over the long run, in the short run, there will be ups and downs. As the swimmer moves up the competitive ladder, he or she must be able to handle the stresses of intense training and competition and also balance swimming with other aspects of life (school and extracurricular activities).

Assessment Days/Tryouts (August 2021)

Assessments will be offered on July 27,29 and August 3 and 5.  Time slots will be 5:30-5:45pm or 5:45-6:00pm.  Each swimmer only needs to attend once.  Please register by going to "join the team/assessments summer 2021". (or click here)

Assessments are free and are for swimmers who age 6-15 who can swim one length on their front, one length on their back and who are comforatable in the deep end.
