Meet The Coaches

Rodney Pilman 
Head Coach, National

Rodney Pilman has been with RAA since 2007 starting as the Head Assistant coach. Rodney became the Head Coach of RAA in 2009, during his time as Head Coach RAA has consistiantly finished in the top 10 at Junior Olympics and SCS championship meets. Since 2009 RAA has produced numerous Junior Olympic champions, Sectional, Jr National and Sr National swimmers. Coach Rodney places great importance on personal excellence and team building. 

Coach Rodney began coaching in College for the Lancer Age Group Swim Team and continued as a Graduate Assistant with the CBU mens and womenst team for two years. As a swimmer Rodney was a All-American athlete for CBU. 

Bryan Haile
General Manager, Junior

Bryan has been involved in competitive swimming since the age of seven. He was a four time MVP while attending Thomas Downey High School in Modesto, California.

 

During his college career at California Baptist University, Bryan’s accomplishments in the sport of swimming include being a four time Central California Conference Champion (100 Breast), two time Champion at the 2008 PCSC Invitational Pentathlon, NAIArecord holder in the 100 and 200 Breaststroke in 2009. Most recently, Bryan finished 10th in the 2010 AT & T Short Course National Championships in the Men’s 100 & 200 Breaststroke.

 

RAA has the wonderful opportunity of having swimmers learn from the wealth of aquatic knowledge that Coach Bryan brings to the team. By using new and innovative teaching techniques to help hone swimmers skills in and out of the water, Coach Bryan helps RAA swimmers attain their highest potential.

Garret Shimko
PR and Event Coordinator, Senior Development

Garret has been a competitive swimmer since the age of 7 and has spent 13 years at RAA as an athlete. He has served as team captain for both RAA, Riverside Poly, and Riverside Community College. He is currently graduating from Cal State San Bernardino with a degree in communications. 
 

Garret brings his knowledge from his time in both age group and junior college swimming. By incorporating innovative sets and training styles, Coach Garret creates a challenging yet fun environment where athletes can continuously increase their knowledge of the sport. 

 

While coaching, Garret also helps coordinate team events such as swim meets, potlucks, and fundraisers. He also helps foster team awareness by working with businesses and our local community.

 

 

 

Monica Scarano
Dolphin 1 & Age Group 2

Prior to RAA, Scarano was the Head Boys and Girls Swim Coach at Woodcrest Christian High School from 2014-18.  Scarano coached CIF-SS qualifiers/finalists and was selected as Ambassador League Coach of the Year in 2015 and 2018.  During 2005-2010 Scarano volunteered in the California Baptist University Lancers Age Group program and supervised and managed data entry for league swim meets, scored meets and complied results and meet awards.

Earlier in her aquatics career Scarano was the Aquatics Director at The University of Alabama in Huntsville where she directed and managed all phases of the university’s aquatics facility.  Having grown up in Alabama she is an experienced swimmer, competing at the high school and college levels and completed numerous triathlons.

 


Drayson Site Director, Senior Development

 

Daniel Hurst

Drayson Site Director/ Junior & Masters Coach

Site Director, Daniel Hurst, has been involved in the athletic community and the sport of swimming for over 13 years. Coach Daniel has a Bachelor of Arts degree in History from UC Santa Cruz as well as a Master of Education from Azusa Pacific University.

He competed for UC Santa Cruz for four years.  Coach Daniel finished with Division 3/NAIA Swimmer of the Meet at his senior conference. He continued to pursue his passion of swimming after he graduated and still swims daily. Coach Daniel spent three years coaching for Loma Linda Academy, while the team worked to consistently outscore all teams in the league.

He has also coached for Redlands East Valley where he has taken many swimmers to the state championships. During the day, coach Daniel is a credentialed Physical Education teacher. Coach Daniel takes pride in helping all of his swimmers reach their full potential in and out of the pool.

 

 

Maddy Broz

Drayson Age Group and Dolphin coach

Maddy Broz coaches our dolphin and age group swimmers. She is very passionate about what she does and strives to make the kids better each and every practice. She loves swimming and hopes to create a fun and safe environment for her swimmers where they can become not only better swimmers, but better people. 

 Maddy learned to swim when she was 2 years old and has loved the water ever since. She has ten years of competitive swimming under belt and was a NCAA Division 1 collegiate swimmer for California Baptist University Lancers. She swam freestyle competing in the 500, 1000, and the 1650. She can go the distance!

 Maddy has been a certified lifeguard and teaching swim lessons since she was 16 and has been a USA certified swim coach coaching competitive swimmers since she was 18. She has worked with all ages, infant to masters, of all skill levels. 

 Maddy graduated from California Baptist University May 2019 with a Bachelors of Science in Criminal Justice. She is looking to further her career in law enforcement and hoping to one day work in forensics. She plans to stay involved with swim, guiding her swimmers to their best as well as continuing her training to become an Ironman.
