Philosophy

Redlands Swim Team is a year-round competitive swim program that offers instruction and training for swimmers of all levels and abilities. RST is committed to promoting the sport of swimming, because of its potential to help individuals achieve excellence, not just in sports, but in life.

BENEFITS

Physical Fitness

Swimming helps develop high quality aerobic endurance, flexibility, coordination, and muscle strength, thus building a strong foundation for a lifetime of good health.

Character Development

Being part of a swim team fosters self-discipline, self-confidence, responsibility, perseverance, good sportsmanship, and teamwork. These traits can produce world-class citizens, as well as world-class athletes! Swimmers learn to strive for excellence, and to face challenges with courage. And they come to understand that if they do their very best, then there are no failures.

Building Relationships

Many close friendships have had their beginnings at our pools, not just between swimmers, but between their families as well. Becoming involved with a swim team can also promote closeness within the family unit, as parents commit to helping swimmers achieve their goals.

Mission

The mission of RST is to empower every swimmer, regardless of age or ability, to reach his or her highest personal potential, both as an athlete and as a person.

TEAM OBJECTIVES

Provide swimmers with the highest quality coaching.

Maintain a supportive and productive swimming environment.

Recognize each individual, and value his or her efforts on behalf of our team.

Encourage mutual respect between swimmers, coaches, and families.

Promote the ideals of self-discipline, hard work, goal-achievement, pursuit of excellence, teamwork, and good sportsmanship through competition for swimmers of all levels of proficiency.

Develop highly skilled individuals and therefore, a highly competitive swim team.

Foster outstanding volunteer support.

History

The Redlands Swim Team (RST) is a non-profit organization working with the youth in our community.   Over the past years, the Redlands Swim Team has coached athletes that have competed in local meets, Junior National competitions and even the Olympics.  RST has produced swimmers who have gained recognition in both Spring and Summer Junior Olympic meets.  Many of these swimmers have been named to the Annual Southern California Top 16 lists and have gone on to achieve national rankings.  Many swimmers from RST have gone on to compete at collegiate levels.  Olympic bronze medal winner Robin Backhaus swam for the Redlands Swim Club from 1967 to 1970.  The RedlandsSwim Team has a strong history.

·        1959:  The Redlands Swim Club was started. It all began at the Sylvan Plunge, with a small group of swimmers preparing for the "Five City Meet"

·        1961: The team expanded to approximately fifty swimmers that competed in dual meets during the summer season.  The Redlands Swim Club finished the dual meet season undefeated. The following summer, Redlands began to establish its reputation with a number of swimmers setting new records in the younger age group.

·       1962: The Redlands Swim Club workouts were moved to the University of Redlands and the YMCA pools and the swim team became a year-round competitive team.

·       1964:  Under the coaching of Bill Shawver and Larry Munz, the Redlands Swim Club began five nights per week workouts at the Redlands High School pool. That summer, Redlands won its dual meet season and      captured the Inland Empire Championship.

·       1972: Summer Olympics, Munich, W. Germany - Robin Backhaus, of Redlands, takes the Bronze medal in the 200 Meter Fly

·       1982: Coach Chuck Riggs joined the Redlands Swim Club as Head Coach.

·       1983: The Redlands Swim Team became incorporated and replaced the Redlands Swim Club.

·       2008: Karl Krug, Mike Perry, Tyler Harp, and Joey Hale of Redlands Swim Team set national record in the 200 Free Relay Mens 17-18 Division with a time of 1:21.94.

·       2008: RST 18-under Men's team wins RST's first Junior National Championship.

Today, Redlands Swim Team continues with a top caliber swim program that encourages even our newest and youngest members to continue the RST tradition. We have a program that works with all levels of swimmers from beginner to highly competitive.  These swimmers work out and compete all year long, rain or shine.
