Garrett McCarthy Head Coach

Garrett McCarthy is the Head Coach for the Boulder Swim Team, USA Swimming Certified and  ASCA Level 4 Certified Coach.

Garrett was a nationally ranked Top 10 age group swimmer in the 1000 and 1650 freestyle, 200 breaststroke and 400 individual medley. His senior year in high school, Garrett placed  13th at Open Nationals in the 1000 freestyle (9:15.8), earning a swim scholarship to the University of Southern California. He graduated with a B.S. in Business Management and Marketing, also receiving the Scholar Athlete Award.

Garrett has been fortunate to be coached by 3 USA Swimmig Hall-of-Fame Coaches: Ledgendary Peter Daland (USC); John Urbanckeck (USA Olympic Training Center); and Pete Malone (Kansas City Blazers).

As a professional  triathlete for 13 years, Garrett won a World Championship Gold Medal (1989) with Team USA in  Avignon, France, a dozen World Cup Top 3 podium finishes & 2 World Cup victories in Beijing, China (1991) & Moscow, Russia (1992). In addition to 37 triathlon victories, competing for Team Ireland (1990-2000), Garrett has coached swimming and triathlon in France, Ireland and Japan.

  • Fairview High School Girls and Boys Swim & Dive Teams (2013-2015)

  • Private swim and stroke lessons (1986-2015)

  • Boulder Aquatic Masters swim programs (2013-2015)

  • YMCA summer swim programs (2014-2015)

  • National and international swimming & triathlon

Garrett brings a high level of competitive swimming experience and unparalleled technical expertise to the pool deck. His hands-on approach to coaching, enthusiasm and love for the sport make him an asset to the team.

Paddy McCole Assistant Coach

Padraic “Paddy” McCole is the Assistant coach of Boulder Swim Team, a USA Swimming and ASCA level 2 Certified Swim Coach

A native from Philadelphia, PA, Paddy has been swimming competitively since he was 8 years old. When he was 13, he received a kidney transplant from his mom. He competed at both the National and World Transplant Olympics. Paddy’s competition has earned him many gold medals and 4 World Records in the 50 m fly, 200m IM, 200m Free, and 200m Medley Relay. His accolades also earned him Sports Illustrated Faces in the Crowd, in the same issue as Michael Phelps “Medal Man” (Aug 2004).

Paddy’s kidney failed and he is back on Dialysis. Odds stacked against him, hasn’t let Paddy down. Still an active competitor, Paddy has turned to passing his passion to younger generations. Along with Coaching for Boulder swimming, Paddy teaches private and group swim lesson through the City of Boulder as well as coached with Boulder Barracudas, Elks, and Boulder Country Club Summer Swim Team, and Boulder Masters. Paddy brings a years of coaching and swimming experience to Boulder swimming. A butterfly and individual medley specialist, he has up to date knowledge of swim techniques, starts, and turns.

Megan Fanning Assistant Coach

Megan is a USA Swimming, ASCA Level 2, certified coach.  She started swimming at the age of 7 and became a long-distance swimmer for most of her career.  Megan has 8 years of coaching experience at many different levels.   While in college, she started working for the USA Swimming National Team.  Megan worked for the National Team for a year and a half learning everything about swimming from the best coaches and athletes in the world.  During this time, she helped develop underwater dolphin kick technology, video review both above and under water, took race statistics on different races, and helped the athletes prepare to reach their full potential during the Rio Olympic Games.  Swimming has always held a special place in Megan’s heart and she looks forward to sharing her knowledge of the sport!
