PRE COMPETITIVE GROUPS

To be part of our introductory group, a swimmer must be able to swim a 25 of free and back. Breathing technique does not have to be perfect.

FUTURE STARS

  • For swimmers 8yo and younger with little or no competitive experience. The swimmer must be able to swim in deep water without the aid of an instructor and should be able to perform back and free competently. The swimmer must be able to listen, learn and be respectful of the coach and teammates in a group environment. The group focus is to learn all four competitive strokes: freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke and butterfly along with the appropriate turns and starts. These swimmers attend 10 and under, Suburban League and USA Swimming meets, but competition is not pushed at this level and up to the discretion of the parent and swimmer.

ROCK STARS (formerly storm)

  • Swimmers 11&Under who are not ready for the competitive team due to commitment, skills or competitive development. Swimmers will learn the technique and skills of a competitive swimmer to include starts, turns and stroke development. Movement into the competitive team is possible from storm when ready.

5 STARS (formerly cyclones)

  • Swimmers 10&Over who are not ready for the competitive team due to commitment, skills or competitive development. Swimmers will learn the technique and skills of a competitive swimmer to include starts, turns and stroke development. Movement into the competitive team is possible from storm when ready.

AQUA GROUP

  • This group is for swimmers 13 & Older who are new to swimming or preparing for high school swimming. Basic technique is required in 2-4 strokes for this group and will build endurance to move into the aqua group. Improvement will increase with the number of practices attended.


COMPETITIVE JUNIOR GROUPS

AGES 5-14yo

 
Meyers's Junior groups are based on age, ability and goals in swimming. The groups are progressive and will teach what is necessary to be as successful as possible immediately and successful in the future. Swimmers should be able to follow directions both verbal and visual, work in a group of peers, and be respectful to teammates, swimming staff and coaches.

GOLD GROUP

  • For swimmers 8yo and younger who can perform back and free correctly and has knowledge of butterfly and breaststroke. Must be able to swim a 50 freestyle without stopping, with the aid of fins is allowed. The swimmer must be able to listen, learn and be respectful of the coach and teammates in a group environment. This group will continue to work on strokes, starts and turns as well as some endurance swimming.These swimmers attend 10 and under, Suburban League and USA Swimming meets, but competition is not pushed at this level and up to the discretion of the parent and swimmer.
  • Swimmers meeting the competitive standard will move to the red group the season they turn 9yo by the championship meet.

RED GROUP

  • For competitive swimmers 9&10yo and non competitive swimmers 9-12yo. Swimmers will be able to swim all four competitive strokes as well as complete appropriate turns and starts legally. Swimmers will be able to count, compute distances and read basic intervals on the clock. These swimmers will be mentally prepared to compete in meets about once a month. Swimmers will execute appropriate and legal turns. The swimmer must be able to listen, learn and be respectful of the coach and teammates in a group environment and exhibit good sportsmanship. Goal setting will be introduced at this level. Swimmers in this group usually attend Suburban League and U.S.A. Swimming meets with aspirations of attaining silver state and state times and moving to a more challenging level.
  • Swimmers who will turn 11yo after SC State and before August 1 will be evaluated to move to the white group if they are able to complete the performance guidelines listed for white, have at least three far westerns times and attend 90% of practices. If these terms are not met, swimmers who turn 11 will move to the white group in the fall if the performance guidelines are met.
  • Swimmers meeting the competitive standard will move to the white group during the season they turn 11yo by the championship meet.

WHITE GROUP

  • Swimmers meeting the competitive standard will move to the black or green group during the season they turn 13yo by the championship meet.
  • For swimmers 11-12 years old. Swimmers will be able to swim all four competitive strokes as well as complete appropriate turns and starts legally.
  • Swimmers need to be prepared to attend 80% of practices. Swimmers should be able to count, compute distances and read more challenging intervals on the clock. These swimmers should be mentally prepared to compete in meets about once a month. Swimmers should execute appropriate and legal turns. The swimmer must be able to listen, learn and be respectful of the coach and teammates in a group environment and exhibit good sportsmanship. Basic knowledge and performance of all strokes is required as well as a maturity level to focus on swimming for increased periods of time. Setting and accomplishing practice and competition goals becomes increasingly important. 
  • Swimmers who will turn 13yo after SC State and before June 1 will be evaluated to move to the black group if they are able to complete the performance guidelines listed for black, have at least three far westerns times and attend 90% of practices. If these terms are not met, swimmers who turn 13 will move to the silver group in the fall if the performance guidelines are met but will be coached by the black group coach at meets during the summer.

BLACK GROUP

  • Swimmers need to be prepared to attend 80% of practices. Swimmers should have an understanding of goal setting, be able to accept constructive criticism from their coach, follow good nutritional habits, understand heart rate as a measure of intensity, know and respect competitors and teammates, exhibit a high level of sportsmanship, show some leadership skills among younger swimmers, and attend recommended meets. Goal meets include state and Far Westerns.
  • To qualify for the group swimmers must be able to perform the following in practice:
  • 10x100 free @ 1:30
  • 3x500 free @ 7:30
  • 5x200 IM @ 3:30
  • 7x100 flutter kick @ 1:50
  • **Swimmers who do not meet one or more of these requirements but turn 13 prior to the next championship meet may swim with the black group after a meeting to include swimmer, parent, white coach and black coach and signing a performance contract. Swimmers will swim with the green group if black doesn't fit with the swimmers ability or commitment.
  • For swimmers 13-14 years old with a strong desire for long term accomplishment in swimming.
  • Swimmers will be constantly evaluated to move to the silver group if they are able to complete the performance guidelines listed for silver, have a ceompetitive level equal that of the silver group, attend 90% of practices and have the desire to compete at sectionals the following year. 
  • Swimmers will be moved to a senior group, aqua, green, orange or blue the season they turn 15yo by the championship meet.

SILVER GROUP

  • Pre-Senior Group practicing with the senior group 2 times a week. The group is designed to move swimmers from age group to senior swimming.  In this situation, intervals and sets may be made more appropriate to the swimmers level. Goal meets include state, Far Westerns and Sectionals.
  • Swimmers need to be prepared to attend 90% of practices. Swimmers should have an understanding of goal setting, be able to accept constructive criticism from their coach, understand heart rate as a measure of intensity, know and respect competitors and teammates, exhibit a high level of sportsmanship, show leadership skills among their peers, and attend recommended meets.
  • Swimmers working to swim with the blue group at age 15 must be able to perform the following in practice.
  • 10x100 free @ 1:15
  • 4x500 free @ 6:30
  • 5x200 IM @ 3:00
  • 7x100 flutter kick @ 1:40
  • **Swimmers who do not meet one or more of these requirements but turn 15 prior to the next championship meet may swim with the blue group after a meeting to include swimmer, parent, silver coach and blue coach and signing a performance contract. Swimmers will swim with the orange or green group if blue doesn't fit with the swimmers ability or commitment.
  • *Swimmers 14yo going starting their freshman year of HS who have 2 sectional qualifying times may swim with the blue group if the above requirements are met and it is ok’d by the blue group coach.
  • Swimmers will move to a senior group, aqua, green, orange or blue, the season they turn 15yo by the champhionship meet.


COMPETITIVE SENIOR GROUPS

AGES 13-21yo

North Jeffco's senior groups are progressive and build upon each other depending on ability and goals. There are requirements for admittance into groups.

GREEN GROUP

  • From the white or black group, athletes move into this group. This group is for swimmers 13 & Older who are new to swimming or preparing for high school swimming. Basic technique is required in 2-4 strokes for this group. Swimmers should plan to attend at least 2-3 practices per week, depending on outside activities, to allow for improvement.

ORANGE GROUP

  • From the white, black silver or green group, athletes move into this group. This group is for 13 and Older swimmers who are not at the sectional level yet or are at that level but cannot commit to the practice requirement of the blue group. Each swimmer should plan on swimming a minimum of 3-4 practices per week if there is a conflict with outside activities, but 5-6 is preferred. 

BLUE GROUP

  • Placement in this senior group is based on previous commitment to swimming, efficiency of stroke, skill mechanics and training ability.  Swimmers will be training and competing at an advanced level to achieve a higher level of stroke efficiency and strong technical skills.  Emphasis is on training energy systems while maintaining stroke efficiency.  Strength training is strongly encouraged to prevent injury during swimming.  Swimmers will be placed on a program  designed for peak performance at Sectionals, Jr Nationals and Nationals.
  • Commitment:  A year round commitment is required and swimmers are expected to attend all scheduled practices.  Swimmers are expected to communicate with the coach in advance if they must miss a workout.
