Claude-Yves Bertrand Head Coach

Hello, my name is Claude-Yves Bertrand, or CYB, for short. I've been working as a competitive swim coach since 1983 after I completed a degree in kinesiology. As a level 4 coach in Canada, I have the chance to coach athletes across an entire spectrum of performances. I've coached s wimmers who stood at the top of the podium at Provincials, Westerns, Canadians Junior Championships, Canadian Swimming Championships, Canada Games and Trials. I have also had swimmers join the Canadian Junior Team and participate at Pan-Am Championships, the World Cup, World Championships, and all-time favorite event: the Olympics. As a team, I have led clubs into finishing 3rd at BC Provincials (Vernon) and 9th at Summer Nationals (Vernon). Many provincial and national records (age group and senior) were also broken.

I like to challenge athletes and my teams/athletes are known to be fit.  I love to catch athletes doing good sets (it makes my day).
You will be surprised to see what you can do.
Let’s go Winskill, let’s embrace the process!
Judy Baker Assistant Head Coach

Hello Winskill! I competed at the club and varsity level and was on the Canadian National swim team for four years. I became internationally ranked at the age of 13: Ranking within the top 20 swimmers in the World for 400 IM, 200 Fly and 800 Free. In 1980, I broke the Canadian record for the 800m Free. I was the first female swimmer inducted to the NAIA Swimming and Diving Hall of Fame and was honoured with Athlete of the Year for Simon Fraser University. I ended my swimming career in 1983 and soon thereafter started coaching full-time.

Upon completing my coaching theory and practicum level three, I became head coach of the Winskill Dolphins in 1989 where I enjoyed many great successes and earned youth coach of the year in 1998; I stepped down from this position in 2000 to focus on running my own business. I sold this business in 2016 so I could give more attention to my true passion in life: swimming. While I have always coached part-time with the Winskill Otters Master’s program, in 2015 I was honoured to be chosen as Canadian National Head Coach for the Deaf. I recently returned this summer from Samsun, Turkey where the Deaflympics were held!

My general philosophy towards swimming is about instilling strong training habits and work ethic while building a sound technical platform in all four competitive strokes. Most importantly I do everything within my power to form healthy and lasting relationships with all my athletes; I believe socializing with both swimmers and their families help to build strong club dynamics. The main objective behind all healthy competitive swim clubs is to provide an opportunity for each of its member’s to attain his or her maximum potential in competitive swimming. I will work with all of the swimmers and their coaches to help provide, where possible, an individualized approach to their goals in this sport!

Sophie Ferguson Head Developmental Coach

Hey Winskill! I first want to welcome you all into our Winskill Dolphins family which I have now been a part of for 5 years!! A little background information about myself, I am currently attending Kwantlen Polytechnic University to attain a bachelor's degree in criminology. I also was a competitive swimmer for 14 years and decided I just couldnt get enough of the water so switched my focus to coaching and I have loved it ever since.

As a coach for the Winskill Dolphins I really try to promote not only hard work, but also the idea of unity or better known as team spirit. I truly believe once an indvidual becomes a WDSC swimmer they are in it for life! To do this I try to make my practices as fun as possible and yet also challenging. I absolutely love seeing my swimmers work hard to attain their goals whether its in or out of the water.

If you have any questions or concerns or simply just want to say hi please dont hesitate to do so! I look forward to seeing you all around the pool deck! :)

Sidney Klassan Conditioning and Technique

Hey there Dolphins, I am super excited to be officially joining the Winskill coaching staff this year. I swam with the Dolphins from ages 12 to 18, soon after, I swam for Simon Fraser University in the NCAA. There I made NCAA II Nationals where I got to represent SFU and Canada. I ‘retired’ from the sport after exhausting my post-secondary eligibility in April, but am planning on starting up in the masters world shortly. In terms of schooling, I just completed my Undergraduate Degree at SFU in Early Learning and Curriculum. I have started my teaching program this fall!

I have been coaching for 8 years. I started off doing gym and swim with the Dolphins, then I moved on to coach, and head coach, the Boundary Bay Bluebacks. More recently I have coached with HYACK, in their junior development and masters programs. I am excited to be returning to my home base as this is the place that ignited my passion for swimming and coaching!

As a coach, I find myself trying to help swimmers recognize and unlock their potential. I do this by incorporating creative and fun workouts that balance technique and hard work while making sure that I acknowledge the effort and improvements that swimmers are leaving in the pool. Ultimately, my goal as a coach is to arouse a passion for the sport in all types of swimmers so that they can pursue swimming in their lives to all ends.

If you are ever looking to get a hold of me or have any questions, please don’t hesitate to reach out! I am looking forward to meeting each and every one of you and having lots of fun in the pool. See you on deck!
