Coaching Staff
Judy Baker Head Coach

Hello Winskill! I competed at the club and varsity level and was on the Canadian National swim team for four years. I became internationally ranked at the age of 13: ranking within the top 20 swimmers in the World for 400 IM, 200 Fly and 800 Free. In 1980, I broke the Canadian record for the 800m Free. I was the first female swimmer inducted into the NAIA Swimming and Diving Hall of Fame and was honoured with Athlete of the Year for Simon Fraser University. I ended my swimming career in 1983 and soon thereafter started coaching full-time.

Upon completing my coaching theory and practicum level three, I became head coach of the Winskill Dolphins in 1989 where I enjoyed many great successes and earned youth coach of the year in 1998; I stepped down from this position in 2000 to focus on running my own business. I sold this business in 2016 so I could give more attention to my true passion in life: swimming. While I have always coached part-time with the Winskill Otters Master’s program, in 2015 I was honoured to be chosen as Canadian National Head Coach for the Deaf. This summer we traveled to Brazil for the Deaflympics!

My general philosophy towards swimming is about instilling strong training habits and work ethic while building a sound technical platform in all four competitive strokes. Most importantly I do everything within my power to form healthy and lasting relationships with all my athletes; I believe socializing with both swimmers and their families to help build strong club dynamics. The main objective behind all healthy competitive swim clubs is to provide an opportunity for each of its members to attain his or her maximum potential in competitive swimming. I will work with all of the swimmers and their coaches to help provide an individualized approach to their goals in this sport!

Duco Schuurman Hess Age Group Gold

Hello! My name is Duco and I spent twelve years of my life in and around the pool as a swimmer. Five of those years have been as a Winskill Dolphin. During my swim career I had the pleasure of competing at some of the biggest meets in Canada. I am very proud to have represented the dolphins at meets such as the B.C. Summer Games, BC Provincials, Western Canadian Championships and Age Group Nationals. I have dedicated years to this great sport and can not wait to begin my first season out of the pool coaching the future stars of swimming. See you at the pool!

Devon Matson Age Group Blue

Hey Dolphins! I’m Devon and I’m so excited to be joining the Winskill Dolphins as a coach for the 2019-2020 swim season! I have been swimming the majority of my life as I joined the Boundary Bay Bluebacks summer swim club when I was 8 years old. Since then it has been one of the things I most look forward to in the summer. In addition to being a swimmer, I also volunteer coached for 2 years, junior coached for an additional 2 years, and group coached for 1 year all with the Bluebacks. I am 16 and a Grade 11 student at SDSS. At school, I am one of the co-presidents of the Interact Club which works with our local Rotary. Outside of the pool, my other interests include playing soccer and riding my horse. After I graduate from high school, my goal is to attend Sauder School of Business at UBC. I’m very excited to meet you and get to know you over the season! See you all on deck!

Alyssa Pace Age Group Blue

Hey Dolphins!  My name is Alyssa and I am super excited to join you this winter as a group coach for the 2019-2020 season! For the past 9 years, I’ve grown up swimming with the North Delta Sunfish summer swim club, and have coached for them for 4 years. I also just completed my first season with the Boundary Bay Bluebacks as a group coach.

I’m excited to help create a fun and competitive swim environment for everyone, like the one that made me stick around swimming all this time. I am eager to start my first season as a winter coach and to embrace this next step in my coaching career. I have learned so much from my past years of coaching and I am excited to learn so much more. I can’t wait to meet everyone and have an amazing season together!  See you at the pool :)

Chloe Glue Junior Development Blue

Hey Dolphins! I’m so excited to be a part of the Winskill Dolphins coaching staff this season. Just last season I was swimming with the club and had been for 6 years, and I’ve volunteer coached for 2 years now. Now I’m ready to focus on coaching with skills I’ve learned from my years of swimming. I’m really looking forward to helping swimmers, in and out of the water, to become better athletes.

I’m really excited to meet everyone, get to know you, and start working with you. As a coach, I want to include fun games and challenges in our practices. This season, I want my swimmers together out of practice feeling happy and accomplished. If you ever have any concerns or questions, please send me an email and we can chat before or after practice. I would love to hear from you!

Sidney Klassen C & T, Mini Dolphins

Hey there Dolphins! I am super excited to be coaching for a second year with the Dolphins. This summer I will be coaching the Conditioning and Technique and Mini Dolphins programs.

I swam with the Dolphins from age 12 to 18, soon after, I swam for Simon Fraser University in the NCAA. There I made NCAA II Nationals where I got to represent SFU and Canada. I ‘retired’ from the sport after exhausting my post-secondary eligibility in April 2018.  In terms of schooling, I just completed my Undergraduate Degree at SFU in Early Learning and Curriculum. This fall I will be completing my teaching program with the intention of becoming certified in December.

I have been coaching for 8 years. I started off doing gym and swim with the Dolphins, then I moved on to coach, and head coach with the Boundary Bay Bluebacks. More recently I have coached with HYACK, in their junior development and masters programs. This past summer, I head coached the Cloverdale Tritons summer swim club and led them to one of their most successful provincials ever! I am excited to be returning to my home base as this is the place that ignited my passion for swimming and coaching!

As a coach, I find myself trying to help swimmers recognize and unlock their potential. I do this by incorporating creative and fun workouts that balance technique and hard work while making sure that I acknowledge the effort and improvements that swimmers are leaving in the pool. Ultimately, my goal as a coach is to arouse a passion for the sport in all types of swimmers so that they can pursue swimming in their lives to all ends.

If you are ever looking to get a hold of me or have any questions, please don’t hesitate to reach out! I am looking forward to meeting each and every one of you and having lots of fun in the pool. See you on deck! Let’s make a splash.
