Meet Recap: Red Deer Valentine Invitational

The first ever Red Deer Valentine Meet was a huge success! Of the 20 swimmers that came to meet, there were  lots of best times and heat winners! Some of the highlights include, Danica Gouglas winning the 200 IM, 100br, 200bk and 100 bk in her age group! And a shoutout to Kiera, Alyssa and Zack for all dropping more than 10 seconds in their 400 free! And of course not forgetting Connor, Udit, Zack and Aaron’s awesome performance in their 200 breast after a long day of racing on Saturday. Coach Maya and I both saw an improvement in the swimmer’s turns, they were all getting in and out of the wall quickly and pushing off with fantastic streamlines! Great job to all the swimmers that came out to this meet!
Go Bears !

General Manager Message

Oil Kings - Aquatics Appreciation Day

Keyano bought 79 tickets to the Oil Kings game on Family Day, which was a blast for all who came out.

First, it was a Star Wars theme day. Walking into Rogers Place was like walking onto a movie set with dozens of Storm Troopers, Darth Vaders, and other famous characters taking pictures with kids all around the concourse. Even the Oil Kings had special Vader-inspired jerseys done up for the big home game. The biggest crowd since opening day obviously pumped up the home team as they jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead in the first period over the divisional threat Medicine Hat Tigers.

At the end of the first period, our Keyano kids were brought down to ice level for an exclusive high-five tunnel to the Oil Kings as they came off the ice. From there, the Keyano crew was whisked off to the Hockey Hall of Fame room, where we could mingle with each other during the intermission and look at some of the historic memorabilia from Edmonton Oilers teams of the past.

Then Edmonton Keyano alumnus, Cheryl Gibson, took the podium to give a special speech to the current Keyano swimmers and families. Cheryl is a 1976 Olympic Silver Medallist. First thing, she handed her Olympic medal straight down to a group of young 10 & under swimmers standing in the front row. Then, she went on to give an interactive speech about what it took to get to an Olympic medal. Never claiming to be the best young kid entering the sport of swimming, her Olympic success was due to characteristics that are far less talent-based like hard work, determination to improve on her weaknesses, and self-confidence. Her final message: There were lots of fast swimmers in her training group, but the swimmers who made it through to the top were the ones who made it through the toughest training.

Back to the hockey game, the Oil Kings were entertaining and came away with a 5-0 shutout win. The Keyano team had a great time and look forward to the next chance to get out together outside of the swimming pool.

Special thanks to Kristi Williams, Chery Keen, Darcie Kiddoo and Tarek Motan for their help at our Keyano display table on the concourse. They represented Keyano to kids and families walking around the arena and handed out pamphlets throughout the game.

And finally, thank you to the Oil Kings for not only offering Keyano discount tickets that were $4.50ea below retail price, but for adding on top of that all of the perks above at no additional cost. If Keyano is interested in continuing to support the Oil Kings at a discounted ticket price, then there is a good possibility of future events and fundraisers becoming common for Edmonton Keyano, like the Chuck-a-Puck fundraiser in December that raised $2700.

Thanks for coming out to the event, and like Cheryl said as she finished her speech: Go Bears!

Training Schedule
The chart above aims to give everyone a head’s up before the sessions start so you can see when/where we can foresee changes to the regular schedule. We may still have to deal with City of Edmonton facility issues, but those are generally few and far between. “Omit Date” means there will be no training on that date; “Move Date” means that training for your pool is moved to the noted pool; “Make-up” means a practice was added on the given date to balance the number of practices between pools.

Dropping the Fee for Session Three
It has a lovely rhyme to it. In short, we have recalculated the fees for Session 3 based on the number of workouts impacted by holidays and PD days and a slightly shorter session overall than we had planned. Rather than extending the swimming session after the school year is done, we have decided to finish the same week as school and reduce the Session 3 cost from $545 to $475.

Swim Alberta Safe Sport Message

Swim Alberta and Swimming Canada are working towards a new policy partnership with Safe Sport. Please click here for a letter from Swim Alberta outlining the importance of safe environments in the sport of competitive swimming in Alberta. Edmonton Keyano supports the Safe Sport movement and over the next year will be implementing important elements from the Safe Sport model. Here's to fun, happy and hard working swim groups!

Upcoming Events:

EKSC Bear Cubs Race Series

NEXT WEDNESDAY!!! : Our second Bear Cubs race day!

Thank you to everyone who came out for the first day of our first Bear Cubs Race Series! By the last 25 freestyle, all the swimmers were seasoned heat sheet readers and marshaling veterans. We sure love seeing all the young swimmers having fun and learning together - that's what the sport is about!

This block we will be running a series of 3 inter club racing nights for our Bronze, Silver and Gold groups. The Bear Cubs Race Series will be held during regular Wednesday evening training times at The Kinsman. The nights are designed to provide a less chaotic introduction to the fun of swim meet racing for our development swimmers.

All our EKSC coaches will be on hand to:

  • teach our development swimmers the processes and procedures of a swim meet e.g. how to read a heat sheet, how to report to marshalling, starting procedures etc.

  • teach some more specific race skills e.g. Starts, breath control, finishing etc.

  • practice pre and post race briefing

The series will also serve as practice for our Club officiating volunteers.

For the first two evenings only the Bronze and Silver groups will be involved. For the final evening of the series in March the Gold groups will also be involved.
