Practice Group Descriptions

The Longmont Swim Club coaching staff makes the decisions on group placement of the swimmer based on the swimmers daily practice habits and season long process. These   are guidelines that help the coaches use to place athletes in the appropriate practice   group. All group assignments are subject to change throughout the swim season per coaches’ discretion.

Splash Group:

Age: 5 to 8

Technique: Swimmers must be able to swim across the pool in any stroke and it is recommended to have completed the City of Longmont Level 3 competencies in order to join.

Attendance: 1 time a week minimum

Practice: This group is an introductory swim team that meets two times per week working on stroke development of the four competitive strokes; butterfly, backstroke, breastroke and freestyle, along with competitive dives from the blocks.

Required equipment

  • Practice suit
  • Goggles
  •  Swim Cap
  • Team shirt and cap to be worn at all meets

Swim meets:

  • Meets are recommended but not required.
  • Silver Circuit meets are beginner level meets to sign up for. 
  • It is also highly recommended to participate in the Redtail hosted meets (Pumpkin Meet and Showdown Meet).

Dues: $60/month

Bronze Group:

Age: 8 to 12

Technique: 4 legal strokes and endurance to train 1500 yards per practice with 200 to 300 yards without stopping.

Attendance: 2 practices a week minimum

Required equipment:

  • Practice suit 
  • Goggles
  • Swim Cap
  • Team shirt and cap to be worn at all swim meets

Swim meets:

  • Meets (2-3 per season) for those wanting to move to Silver Group.
  • Meets as recommended by the coach.
  • District meets and Redtail hosted (pumpkin meet and showdown meet) meets are required.
  • Swimmers qualifying for state championships are expected to participate.

Dues: $85/month

Silver Group:

Age: 10 to 13

Technique: Legal 100 IM without stopping. All 4 stroke turns. Block dive & backstroke start

Attendance: 3 practices a week minimum

Practice: 10 x 50 free @ :55 and ability to complete practices without sitting out or bouncing on the bottom.

Required equipment (must have all equipment and replace when lost or broken)

  • finis swimmers snorkel
  •  pull buoy (appropriate size for your body)
  • mesh Bag
  • zoomer training fins (these are the short ones not the long ones)
  • finis leg band for pulling
  •  finis alignment board (small yellow triangle with hand strap)
  • Team shirt and cap to be worn at all swim meets

Swim meets:

  • Meets (3-4 per season) are mandatory for those wanting to move to the Gold group.
  • All meets assigned by coaching staff is recommended
  • District meets and Redtail hosted meets are required
  • Swimmers qualifying for state championships are expected to participate.

Dues: $105/month

Gold Group:

Age: 11 to 16

Technique:  All 4 strokes, all turns, Block dive & Backstroke start, underwater Dolphin kick.

Attendance: 4 times a week minimum

Performance: Should swim “most” events available for their age group.

Practice: 10x100FR @ 1:40 6x100IM @ 1:50 10x50 kick @ 1:05

Required equipment (must have all equipment and replace when lost or broken) 

  • Finis swimmers snorkel
  • TYR catalyst training paddle
  • Pull buoy (appropriate size for your body)
  •  Mesh Bag
  •  Zoomer training fins (these are the short fins not the long ones
  •  Finis leg band for pulling
  •   Finis alignment board (small yellow triangle w/hand strap)
  •  Team shirt and cap to be worn at all swim meets

Swim meets:

  • Meets (4-5 per season) are mandatory for those wanting to move to Senior
  • District meets and Redtail hosted meets are required
  • Swimmers qualifying for state championships are expected to participate

Dues: $125/month

Senior Group

Age: 13 and up

Technique: Must have mastery of all team skills and drills and be approved by head coach.

Attendance: 5 to 6 practices per week

Performance: Must compete in highest meet qualified for to maintain group status

Practice:  10x200FR @ 2:40 4x400IM @ 6:30 10x100 @ 1:30

Required equipment (must have all equipment and replace when lost or broken)

  • TYR Catalyst Paddles
  • Tempo Timer (one that is battery replaceable)
  • Zoomer Training Fins (these are the short fins not the long ones)
  • Finis Alignment Board (small triangle w/hand strap)
  • Finis Swimmers Snorkel
  • Mesh Bag, to hold equipment
  • Buoy
  • 2 tennis balls
  • Finis leg band
  • Team shirt and cap to be worn at all meets

Swim meets:

  • Swim meet participation is mandatory.
  • Swimmers qualifying for state championships, zones, sectionals, and nationals are expected to participate.

Dues: $145/month

DUES AND FEE PAYMENT POLICY: All dues and fees are billed on the 1st of the month with payment charged by ACH or CC. Non-payment of all dues/fees past the 1st day of the following month will result in suspension of the swimmer(s) from practice and all meets until payment is made.
