Practice Group Descriptions

The coaching staff meets twice a year at the beginning of each season to discuss group placements based on observing a swimmer throughout a season, during daily practices, and assessing their meet performance.  These are general guidelines that help the coaching staff place athletes in the appropriate practice groups. While these are the general guidelines, ultimately the decision to move a swimmer is made by the head coach and coaching staff. Each group will be trained to improve all aspects of their competitive swimming and work towards the goal of being moved into the next group progressing over time.

Diamond

This group is composed of swimmers ages 12- 18. They train 1 ½ to 2 hours 5 to 6 days a week during the short course season and add double 2-hour practices in a day during the long course season.

Rate: $150/month

Goal: Athletes in this group will train both physically and mentally to compete at the state and national level. They are required to be at practices and meets and work their other activities schedules around their swimming training when at all possible.  They will train on pace for their events and refine their techniques.  They have high goals of qualifying for high school state, club state, senior zones, sectionals, junior nationals and beyond.

Cognitive: Athletes are committed to their training.  They know their race times for their events and strive to train at this level or faster during training sessions when the set requires it. They will be taught realistic individual goal development on three different levels: short term (achievable in a season), mid-term (achievable in the next 2-3 years) and long term (achievable beyond 5 years). They adhere to USA swimming safe sport regulations and lead by example setting high standards both in the pool and out of the pool. Athletes will be taught how to compose themselves at a meet or practice where races or training sessions are not at their best. They will evaluate great things about their performance and what needs to be worked on in other areas, rather than being upset and focusing on the negativity of a performance.

Technique: Athletes in this group are advanced in their swimming technique and work at refining the base they have built over the years through drills and repetition. They have good body awareness and are able to adjust and refine their skills through body balance and core manipulation techniques.

Endurance: Athletes will train 4000 to 8000 yards per practice depending on the time of the season they are in. Coaches will have a season plan through technique, endurance, and speed and pace training.  They will be tapered for optimal performance for 1 to 2 meets per season.

Requirements/Equipment: Athletes will attend the majority of practices and meets beyond the mandatory minimum meets on the schedule.  They come to practice ready to get in with caps and goggles on at the start of practice on their own initiative.
