Congratulations to Rebecca Binder, Minnesota Swimming's 2021 Outstanding Service Award Recipient!

Ann Watanabe

At the 2021 Grand Finale Meet held in Rochester, on April 11, Rebecca was awarded the 2021 Minnesota Swimming Outstanding Service Award. She received the award from General Chair, Ann Watanabe (right) and Executive Director, Danielle Wentzel (left).

Through it all, Rebecca has been a leader in developing processes to help build efficiency and compliance within the LSC, advocates for all athletes, and as a whole, has made Minnesota Swimming a better organization.  Rebecca’s tireless service and devotion to the sport of swimming, ensuring athletes are our top priority, are just some of the many reasons why she is this year’s recipient of the USA Swimming Outstanding Service Award.  Please join me in congratulating Rebecca Binder!

Like many volunteers within Minnesota Swimming, Rebecca began her association with MNSI through her son, who swims with MYWO.  She often recites that sitting in the stands at meets wasn’t for her, but finding a meaningful way to help her son’s club was her ultimate goal.  Not only has Rebecca done just that, but so much more.  She is a steadfast support of athletes.  Rebecca began officiating many years ago.  She is certified in all positions and holds national certifications in Admin, Chief Judge, Starter, and Stroke & Turn.  But more than just credentials, Rebecca has been a leader in building the base of officials and is known for her recruitment and mentoring of other officials.  More recently, Rebecca has worked with members of the Officials Committee to deliver online info sessions and advanced virtual trainings for stroke and turn officials.  Besides officiating at both small and large invitational meets, Rebecca was instrumental in building the position of Safe Sport Chair within the LSC.  She skillfully prepared webinar sessions on MAAPP (Minor Athlete Abuse Protection Policy) not only for Minnesota clubs, athletes, coaches, and parents, but also for neighboring LSC’s, and MNSI’s House of Delegates. She traveled to numerous clubs in Minnesota to share the importance of Safe Sport.  And she represented the LSC at several national conferences and workshops.  After several years of serving as Safe Sport Chair, Rebecca chose to continue her selfless service to the LSC and was elected to Administrative Vice Chair in 2020 with the goal of helping the LSC through change.  And there has been a lot of it this past year.  Through it all, Rebecca has been a leader in developing processes to help build efficiency and compliance within the LSC, advocates for all athletes, and as a whole, has made Minnesota Swimming a better organization.

It is for these reasons that Rebecca Binder was chosen for the 2021 Outstanding Service award.
