Gunnar Schmidt HEAD COACH
Head Coach & Senior Blue Lead Coach

Originally from Phoenix, AZ Schmidt moved to Ann Arbor to attend the University of Michigan and competed on their varsity swim team. Schmidt graduated in 2009 and transitioned from athlete to coach at the TOPS YMCA Swim Club in the west suburbs of Chicago. Schmidt returned to Ann Arbor in 2014 and began working for Club Wolverine and the University of Michigan swim and dive team.

Gunnar Schmidt was appointed the Head Coach of Club Wolverine in 2016. During his time as Head Coach, Club Wolverine has risen to one of the top teams in the Central Zone and Nation. Schmidt was awarded NCSA Coach of the Year in 2018. He has coached numerous state championship teams and qualified athletes for Junior Nationals, US Nationals, and Olympic Trials.
Intermediate Blue Lead Coach, Meet Entry Chair
Pat brings 19 years of experience coaching swimming with all age groups. Pat is now the lead coach for the Intermediate Blue group and is an assistant coach to the National group. 
Pat was born and raised in Ypsilanti, Michigan. He swam as an age grouper at YOSC and Chippewa Country Club. He attended Ypsilanti High School where he swam four years and was Captain both Junior and Senior year. He attended Eastern Michigan University where he graduated with a Bachelor in Science in Physical Education/Health Education.
Pat has coached many State, Zone, Junior National and National level swimmers and helped develop Olympic Trial qualifies.
Some important accomplishments while coaching at CW 2009-Present
  • 32 New Team records during Long course season (2014-2018)
  • 40 New Team records during Short course season (2014-2018)
  • Multiple New state records for LCM season and for SCY season
  • 5 Zone meet records: (2016-2018)
  • 50 + zone qualifiers, 25 sectional qualifiers, & 15 NCSA Junior National qualifiers, 5 Junior National qualifiers, 2 National qualifiers
  • 45 individual swims were or are still in the USA age group rankings
Pat was also a finalist for the ASCA Fitter and Faster Age Group Coach of the Year in 2016
Pat enjoys teaching and coaching kids the value of a healthy/active lifestyle and many life lessons through the sport of swimming.

Josh Wood COACH

Senior Maize & Senior White Lead Coach

Joshua Wood has been a coach within USA Swimming since November 2010. Prior to joining Club Wolverine (CW) in August 2015, Josh coached with Lakes Area Tridents Swimming (Walled Lake, MI) from 2010-2015, working his way up from an Assistant Group Coach to Head Coach.

Currently, Josh is the Lead Senior Maize/White Coach (AA). Since joining CW in 2015, he has served as Lead Intermediate Blue Coach (Brighton), Associate Head Site Coach (Brighton), Head Site Coach (Brighton), and Lead Senior White Coach (AA). During his coaching tenure, Josh has developed numerous State and Zone qualifiers, finalists, & champions, Sectional and NCSA qualifiers, and one Speedo Junior National swimmer.

In addition to coaching USA Swimming, Josh has experience coaching Middle School swimming (2009) and High School Women’s Swimming (2013-2017). Josh also serves as Meet Director for the Club. In addition to coaching, Josh has served in the Michigan LSC in several capacities including: Zone Team Coach, Secretary and Chair of the Board of Review, Jr/Sr Coaches Representative, member of the Technical Planning Committee, Chair of the Championship Meet Strategy Committee, and as a Stroke/Turn Official.

Karl Shaffer COACH

Intermediate White & Maize Lead Coach



Karl is a USA Certified Level 2 (soon to be L4) Coach as well as a Level 2 United States Masters Coach. He has been coaching full time for the past seven years (part-time over the past 40 years). He enjoys working with middle school age athletes. His primary experience has been with athletes 10-14 years of age swimming for USA Swimming, MISCA, Asia Pacific Athletic Conference and summer league programs.

He is currently a candidate with the XVIII ASCA Fellows Class of 2019.  The 2019 program objective is to assist in the creation of a central, coaches library, to improve the quality of coaching resources, and as such, the education of swimmers.

Finding it difficult to stay in one place, Karl brings a worldly perspective to his coaching, having lived in Adelaide, Australia, and Shanghai, PRC, with extended periods in France, Germany, and the United Kingdom.

He loves traveling with Kris, his wife of thirty-years, and his four children, Karah, Chloe, Stefan and Kate. Mired in denial, he goes by GPK to his two grandchildren Leigha and Jameson.
