Bolles Swimming March 19th Update

Peter Verhoef

Bolles Swimming Mako, Tiger, Hammerhead, Great White Families,

We have been advised that the Bolles Campus will remain closed until April 15th.  We will continue to review and communicate with the Bolles School administration, appropriate federal, state and local resources to determine next steps and provide you with updates on Monday’s and Thursday’s should any circumstances change.

During this time, our coaches will continue to send and post updates and activities to keep your children engaged while home. We are glad to see that many of you are enthusiastically participating in this opportunity to stay connected and engaged with your fellow Sharks families online. If you haven’t already, please check our website “Closed Campus Resources” tab and follow on us social media!

Website Upgrade

While our coaches have not been on deck for a few days, we are already beginning to make headway on some projects we have been excited about recently.  First is a new look for our team website!  If you navigate to Team Unify you will notice an upgraded look and new layout.  This was part of an upgrade to our services made early in the year and with some extra hours in the past week we were able to finalize the process.  Your account access and online resources remain the same – click here for a quick overview of how to navigate the new look.

Billing

We are committed to ensuring the safety and wellbeing of everyone in our program and community. We understand many families are facing financial challenges during this time. Therefore, on April 1, we will suspend billing of all coaching fee installments for the month of April. Though the Bolles School and Sharks are closed, our normal operating expenses remain (paying coaches and pool maintenance).  We plan to resume normal billing or adjust billing to reflect an appropriate discount in May.  We will evaluate in the coming weeks to accurately reflect the changes necessary to support our families through this time and to maintain the integrity of our staff in the best way possible.

If you have an individual concern or need that we may be able to assist you with please email coach Peter (Senior families), Coach Dale (Age Group families) or Carole Emerson.  We will do our best to support each family through this time.  We will be billing event fees and apparel charges made prior to April 1st on this billing cycle.

Competitions

USA Swimming has suspended ALL meets through April 30th at this time.  We will continue to monitor communication from local governments and USA Swimming to adapt and adjust our meet schedule moving forward.  At this time we are not going to cancel or change plans for meets in May through August until we know more information.  Our coaches are currently working on preparation plans for both short and long term disruptions to our planned season.  As we receive updates on both our ability to prepare and what competitions are available we will update you as well.

Boarding Program Changes

We received news that the Bolles Residence Life program will be closing the dorms on campus due to student-athlete safety concerns.  We have not heard of a date they would re-open and we understand this could extend to the end of the semester with distance learning options available for all students to that time.  Boarding program families should look for information from the residence life staff in relation to the dorms.  I will be sending a separate communication for boarding families with specific Shark updates for them.  In the event we do not get an opportunity to finish our spring with our full senior class we will look for ways to recognize them and their impact through our online networks.

We are cancelling our planned trip to the Charlotte Ultraswim in May.  Families will not be responsible for any payments or travel fees.   We will be watching closely for updates on the Olympic games and Olympic Trials and will develop a plan for student-athletes to reach for those goals as the options become clear.  We will begin to plan for a National level experience in late July/August for qualified Futures and Juniors athletes.

Bolles Resident Life Swimmers,

With yesterdays announcement that the Bolles dorms will be closed until further notice our coaches and swimmers want to express our gratitude and appreciation for all of you.  We are uncertain as to what the future will be for the Bolles Campus and the resident-life program this spring and summer.  We are however certain that your presence on our campus has made an impact on us and your absence (for the time being) will make a difference!  We as a staff support our administrators and leaders in making this decision for the best interest of our students and community and we want to focus our energy on what comes next.

For our seniors; we know this could mean that we will not have a chance to finish your Bolles experience as we had all planned.  We hope to have you back on campus this spring, but in the event that we do not we would like to find ways to recognize your impact on our program online, and ongoing.  We all join in saying THANK YOU at this time for your time with us, and we hope we get the opportunity to do so in person.

For our student-athletes who will be returning in the future; please stay diligent with your online coursework!  As we navigate these next months it will be important that we look ahead to our goals as a program in the pool but also out of the pool and while ‘distance learning’ may be a challenge for some of you it is important to remember that it will count towards academic eligibility and collegiate success!  We plan to leave you in our communication to include workouts, team building, and planning.  We will communicate updates to our season plan for you as we know more – for now please ENJOY your time with family and at home.  It is important that we embrace this time for what it is and how we can strengthen our relationships at home.

For families and especially parents; THANK YOU for your commitment to Bolles and Bolles Swimming.  A couple of logistical items; we will be suspending your Sharks billing immediately and for the duration of the season. (past meet fees and apparel items will still be included).  We will discuss any other billing if and when student-athletes return to campus.  As we all get re-set to our homes we will work to touch base with everyone about the possibilities of competitions this spring and summer.  As of right now there is more changes still to come so we want to appropriately support each swimmer according to what is reasonably available to them.  Please let me know if you have any other swimming related concerns or questions.  I plan to communicate and work as closely as possible with residence life staff to be quick with any possible changes or progress.

Most importantly we want you to know how much your CHOICE to be a part of Bolles and Bolles Swimming means to us as coaches, teammates, and families.  You are missed already and we look forward to seeing all of you – seniors included on deck in the future!

If you have anything we can help you with, please do not hesitate to ask.  We will leave you on our Bolles communication as we move forward so you can stay ahead on what is happening here.
