Bolles Swimming COVID Update 7-25-2021

Peter Verhoef

Bolles Families,

Coaches have been notified of 4 cases of student-athletes testing positive for COVID in the past two weeks.  These student-athletes are experiencing mild or no symptoms.  Our intention is to keep our families informed and empower them to make decisions for the best interest of their health and wellness.

On Friday we sent a communication to the team identifying updated quarantine protocols and helpful guidelines (included below).  You can review CDC and Department of Health policies/guidelines on their respective websites.  We as a staff are working to develop a better understanding of contact tracing and other protocols with the recent increase in cases.

Coaches will be adjusting any indoor practice activities and reminding student-athletes of optimal hygiene, contact, and wellness practices.  We will continue to conduct traditional practices as scheduled this week.  Should any changes be necessary we will communicate that prior to 2021-2022 practices beginning.

We ask that all families review the risks associated with practices and competitions as we are currently experiencing them.  We have gotten no communication that there will be any specific protocols in place at the meets taking place in Huntsville, Orlando, or Tallahassee this coming weekend.  For practices and meets in this coming week, we ask that if you are experiencing COVID19 symptoms to please refrain from participation or travel (please contact us for next steps).  If your family is not comfortable with the risks associated with these activities, coaches will support the decision of each family to participate or not.

We remain committed to moving forward with our programming while being transparent about the risks and procedures involved.  Thank you for your support,

Coach Peter & the Bolles Coaching Staff

Message sent to team members on Friday July 23:

.  In alignment with the Bolles School, we plan to provide as much of the traditional Bolles Sharks experience each day.  We remain committed to our vision of creating better people and better swimmers.  We will take steps to mitigate risks moving forward and we need your help in that.

  • Practices and competition schedules will remain ‘normal’.  We understand that it is your choice to attend or take part in any group activity and we respect your decision to participate.  Coaches will understand personal decisions to stay away from the pool.  Any changes to billing for withdrawal due to COVID19 issues will be discussed in further communication.

  • PLEASE.  Do not attend Shark’s activities if you have symptoms of illness.  Even if you are unsure if your symptoms are COVID or your symptoms are mild, please stay home and contact a coach for an alternative practice plan (if available).  Student-athletes and coaches who report illness symptoms will kindly be asked to leave the practice environment.

  • Coaches will focus on keeping as many activities and practices outdoors as possible.  When indoors, we will work to create appropriate social distancing.  In cases where this is not possible coaches will let athletes know in advance and any alternatives available.

  • Masks are optional for all participants and guests; proof of vaccination is not required to participate.  People who are fully vaccinated do NOT need to quarantine unless they exhibit symptoms. (per health department)

  • Outdoor and in-water spaces are not considered for contact tracing.  Indoor spaces (dryland room, weight room, and carpools) will be considered areas for close contact student-athletes should not spend more than 15 minutes together in the bleachers or parking lot.

  • Student-athletes who test positive for COVID will remain home for 10 days from onset of symptoms.  Individuals identified to have close contact should quarantine: 10 days without testing and 7 days after receiving a negative test result (test must occur on day 5 or later).

  • Please notify Bolles coaches of a positive test.  We will ask for information regarding close contacts and contact anyone listed related to a Sharks activity.  Names of positive COVID persons will not be released or discussed.

The challenges of the past 18 months have taught us the value of our mission and the value of the people who pursue it.  We will move forward in a way to honor both.  With COVID, there are risks associated with any activity involving other people.  We respect each person’s approach to managing that risk.  Please be safe and prudent when approaching practices and competitions through the remainder of the summer.

We will look to update any policies or procedures in alignment with the Bolles School's procedures as the 2021-22 year approaches.
