2020–2021 COVID-19 Screening and Practice Protocols

Screening
By registering myself or my child with Gator Swim Club, I agree to abide by any and all restrictions from GSC or its facilities in relation to COVID-19 throughout the 2020-2021 swim year.

  • To reduce the spread of contagious viruses and to help protect each other, my child/children and I will follow GSC's swim practice protocols at all facilities.
  • I will immediately notify GSC by e-mailing [email protected] if myself or my child:
    • becomes ill with symptoms of COVID-19 including, but not limited to, fever/chills, shortness of breath or difficulty breathing, cough, muscle pain, sore throat, new loss of taste or smell, nausea, or diarrhea.
    • receives a positive test for COVID-19.
    • has direct contact with someone who has a positive test for COVID-19 or is under investigation for suspected COVID-19 or is ill with a respiratory illness.
    • misses practice due to travel internationally or domestically to locations experiencing an increased incidence of COVD-19 (including within Florida).
  • In the event of myself or my child developing symptoms or having direct contact with someone symptomatic of or tested positive with COVID-19, I agree to follow GSC's illness protocol, including but not limited to keeping myself or my child out of practice.

Protocols
By registering my child(ren) or myself for participation with Gator Swim Club, I agree to abide by the facility protocols below, along with any new or different protocols developed through the 2020-2021 swim year in response to changes in public health guidance or facility requirements.

YMCA

SWIMMERS
  • It is highly recommended but not required that swimmers wear face coverings until the start of and after the end of practice. When approaching and exiting the pool area, swimmers should maintain at least 6 feet of distance from each other.
  • Swimmers are required to walk in and walk out in their suits, entering the pool area only 5 minutes before the start of practice to avoid congregating on the pool deck.
  • Swimmers will enter the pool area through the side gate that faces the YMCA driveway, maintaining at least 6 feet of distance from each other. Athletes must immediately go to their pre-assigned end of the pool, place their swim bags on the benches (driveway end) or on the steps or tables (building end), and take their swim equipment and water bottle to their pre-assigned lane.
  • Social distancing practice layouts will be followed per USA Swimming and/or facility restrictions. Swimmers must avoid any close contact during a set.
  • Showering and/or changing at the facility is discouraged because swimmers would be grouping indoors and in close proximity to each other.
  • After practice, swimmers will wrap-and-go, collecting their belongings and exiting through the side gate.

PARENTS
  • If parents are staying until practice is over, they may wait outside the fenced area or in their cars. If waiting outside the pool fence, social distancing guidelines must be followed.
  • Parents must be ready to pick athletes up as soon as practice finishes, AND be on-site if there is a forecast of severe weather during practice that might necessitate the dismissal of swimmers.
  • Parents must not stop or park along the YMCA driveway for drop-off or pick-up; please park in the parking lot and have swimmers walk to and from your parking spot.

O'Connell Center

SWIMMERS AND PARENTS
Before Practice
  • Swimmers will be required to come to practice in their suits as changing and/or showering at the pool is NOT allowed. Any swimmer found doing this will not be allowed to practice. Per USA Swimming rules, deck changing is also prohibited.
  • Swimmers must make sure they have all equipment as there will be no shared or borrowed gear.
  • Swimmers must make sure they have a full water bottle as water fountains may not be available.
  • Swimmers must be able to put on their own caps as teammates and coaches will not be able to help because of social distancing requirements. Girls whose suits have ties need to be able to re-tie them themselves if they become loose during practice.

Arrival
  • The west parking lot (between the O'Connell Center and the baseball field) will be closed through the end of 2020; Stadium Road in front of the O'Connell Center is also closed due to construction. Parents must park in the garage or lot behind the building for drop-off. Parents MUST NOT drop off their children on Stadium Road or Gale Lemerand Drive.
  • Swimmers age 11 and under must be walked around the building to the lower Gate 3 pool door/gate by a parent or other adult. Swimmers must wear facial coverings as they approach the pool entry, maintaining 6 feet of social distancing space between swimmers at all times (except for between siblings).
  • Once in the pool area, swimmers must:
    • Keep their face coverings on until they prepare to enter the water.
    • Continue to maintain 6 feet of social distance at all times.
    • Place their swim bags on the colored spot markers 6 feet apart in their pre-assigned area on the pool deck or on the concrete steps, and wait there for practice to begin. Areas are pre-assigned to minimize mingling among groups.
  • Coaches will call swimmers over to the pool when practice is starting. Swimmers should proceed directly to their pre-assigned land/end, taking only their training equipment and water bottle to the pool edge. Face coverings can be removed at this time and left with swim bags.
  • Parents will not be able to enter the pool areas or viewing balcony. Siblings waiting for a later practice time can only wait on the pool deck if prearranged with GSC staff, and they will not be allowed to leave the pool deck.
  • Swimmers are not allowed to be anywhere in the O'Connell Center except in the pool areas; parents are not allowed to be inside the building except for restrooms in the Gate 2 lobby, but can wait outside on the grounds or in their cars.

During Practice
  • Social distancing practice layouts will be followed per USA Swimming and/or facility restrictions. Swimmers must avoid any close contact during a set.
  • Locker rooms will each be limited to 1 person at a time, for restroom use only.

After Practice
  • Parents must be ready to pick up their athletes as soon as practice finishes.
  • Swimmers must "wrap and go": wrap up in a towel, put face covering back on, collect equipment, and prepare to head out of the pool area. Changing and/or showering is NOT allowed and locker rooms will not be available except for restroom use, 1 person at a time.
  • Swimmers will leave the indoor pool through the hallway by the GSC offices at the diving tower end of the pool and then exit the building at upper Gate 2. Swimmers will leave the outdoor pool via lower Gate 2.
  • Parents of swimmers 11 and under must meet their child(ren) on the grounds outside Gate 2. Swimmers are not allowed to go anywhere else in the O'Connell Center while en route to their exit. Parents MUST NOT not pick up their children on Stadium Road or Gale Lemerand Drive.
  • Departures will be monitored by GSC staff and swimmers must maintain 6 feet of social distancing space at all times during dismissal and departure.
  • Congregating and/or lingering on the pool deck will not be allowed because we must clear the area for the next group to enter or for pool closure if practice is at the end of the day.

LIGHTNING POLICY
  • If the pool is cleared because of lightning, swimmers will be expected to gather their equipment and exit the pool, returning to a vehicle for shelter. • GSC coaches will monitor the weather situation with pool staff. Return to practice or cancellation will be communicated to swimmers/parents.
