Training Group Descriptions, Requirements, and Tryout Information

Planet Swim Aquatics offers 9 training groups as part of our year-round swim program. Each training group has its own requirements and age restrictions. When assingning training groups, our coaching staff takes into consideration both skill level and age. Below is a detailed description and standards for each training group.

 

Pre-Swim Team (10 & Over) 

This training group is geared to swimmers who are looking to join the year-round competitive swim team but needs to refine skills and build endurance before joining one of our training groups.

Requirements: 

  • Be at least 10 years old or older
  • Be able to swim 25 yards freestyle and backstroke
  • Know basic mechanics of all four swimming strokes 
  • Be capable of keeping up with the group during training and follow instructions from the coach

Training Equipment:

Team suit, swimming goggles, team cap (if the swimmers wear one), water bottle, junior kickboard, fins and pull buoy.

Sailfish I (6 to 8 years old) 

This training group is designed for swimmers who are intending to swim competitively. In this group, swimmers can expect to work on perfecting all 4 swimming strokes, as well as developing starts and turns technique. Sailfish I offers a perfect opportunity for swimmers who swim summer/recreational leagues looking to swim competitively year-round. Sailfish I swimmers are expected to attend at least 2 training sessions per week to make sure the swimmer has the opportunity to improve on different skills as the season progresses.

Requirements: 

  • Be at least 6-years-old
  • Be able to swim 25 yards freestyle and backstroke
  • Be capable of keeping up with the group during training and follow instructions from the coach

Training Equipment:

Team suit, swimming goggles, team cap (if the swimmers wear one), water bottle, junior kickboard and finis floating fins.

Sailfish II (9 & 10 years old)

Sailfish II is an extension of our Sailfish I group as it offers swimmers an opportunity to continue developing stroke technique with a variety of drills while being introduced to aerobic training. Swimmers in this group are expected to attend at least 4 training sessions per week.

Requirements: 

  • Must be able to swim 25 yards of all four swimming strokes legally
  • Be capable of keeping up with the group during training
  • Be capable to read the pace clock and manage intervals

Training Equipment: 

Team suit, swimming goggles, team cap (if the swimmers wear one), water bottle, junior kickboard, fins, pull buoy, XS TYR catalyst paddles and snorkel.

Sailfish + (10 & under)

Sailfish + is an extension of our Sailfish groups as it continues to offer swimmers an opportunity to develop stroke technique with a variety of drills, while putting an emphasis on endurance development through aerobic training. In this group, training will be geared toward improving swimmers' endurance and speed. Swimmers in this group are expected to attend at least 4 training sessions per week.

Requirements: 

  • 75% of meets are attended per season
     
  • 75% of practices attended per month
     
  • FLAGs Participant
     
  • 5 x 100 Freestyle @ 1:40
     
  • Be capable of keeping up with the group during training
  • Be capable to read the pace clock and manage intervals
  • Coach's Discretion

Team suit, swimming goggles, team cap (if the swimmers wear one), water bottle, junior kickboard, fins, pull buoy, XS TYR catalyst paddles and snorkel.

Age Group (11 & 12 years old)

This group will develop aerobic capacity while working on all 4 swimming strokes technique. Race pace training and race stategy are also introduced in this group.

 Requirements:

  • Must be able to swim 500 yards freestyle non-stop and 100 yards of all four swimming strokes
  • Be capable of keeping up with the group during training
  • Be capable to read the pace clock and manage intervals
  • Attend at least 4 training sessions per week

Training Equipment: 

Team suit, swimming goggles, team cap (if the swimmers wear one), water bottle, kickboard, fins, pull buoy, TYR catalyst paddles, snorkel, parachute and mesh bag.

Age Group Elite (13 & 14 years old)

In this group swimmers are expected to begin refining their commitment to the sport as they begin participating in championship meets which require qualifying time standards, including the Florida Age Group Championships (FLAGs). This group focuses on further development of the aerobic and anaerobic capacities while developing race strategy skills.

Requirements:

  • Must be able to swim 1000 yards freestyle non-stop and 200 yards of all four swimming strokes
  • Be capable of keeping up with the group during training
  • Be capable to read the pace clock and manage intervals
  • Attend at least 5 training sessions per week

Training Equipment:

Team suit, swimming goggles, team cap (if the swimmers wear one), water bottle, kickboard, fins, pull buoy, TYR catalyst paddles, snorkel, parachute, tyr kickboard drag chute and mesh bag.

Sr. Group (14 & over)

Geared towards High School aged swimmers looking to complement their High School training. Most participants are high school student-athletes looking to improve their endurance and technique outside of their High School training settting while aiming to qualify for FL Swimming Sr. Champs and High School State Championships.

Requirements: 

  • Be at least 14 years old and/or be in High School
  • Must be able to swim 200 yards of all four swimming strokes non-stop
  • Be capable of keeping up with the group during training

Training Equipment: 

Team suit, swimming goggles, team cap (if the swimmers wear one), water bottle, kickboard, fins, pull buoy, TYR catalyst paddles, snorkel, parachute, tyr kickboard drag chute and mesh bag.

Elite (14 & over)

The Elite training group is the highest level of training available at Planet Swim Aquatics. Swimmers in this group are expected to participate not only in the in-water training sessions, but also dryland training up to 3 times per week. Most participants are high school student-athletes looking to qualify for Sectionals, Nationals and High School State Championships. In addition to participating at the highest level meets in the nation, swimmers in this training group are often looking to obtain an athletic scholarship to swim in college.

Requirements: 

  • Be at least 14 years old and/or be in High School
  • Must be able to swim 1650 yards/1500 meters freestyle non-stop and 200 yards of all four swimming strokes
  • Be capable of keeping up with the group during training
  • Have at minimum 1 valid FL Sr. Championship time standard
  • Maintain 90% attendance during the season
  • Attend 75% of the swim meets on the schedule for the season

Masters (18 & up)

PSA Masters group is registered with USA Masters offering a friendly and positive environment to anyone who is interested in working on their technique, race strategy, conditioning for a Triathlon or simply just keeping in shape. Our mission is to encourage adults to swim regardless of their swimming ability and background. There are no real upper age nor skill level restrictions, everyone is welcome to join this unique group that is led and structured by an experienced coaching staff on a daily basis. Participants in this group may choose to attend training sessions 2x or 3-5x per week.
