Alicia Davie Named One of 25 Swimmers Invited to USA Swimming National Open Water Select Camp

Camp highlights elite young open water talent from around the country

Alicia Davie was selected to participate in USA Swimming’s National Open Water Select Camp. The elite camp features 25 emerging open water swimmers from around the country and will take place August 13 – 18 in Pleasant Prairie, Wisconsin. By the end of the week, camp attendees will also participate in the UANA Junior Open Water Swimming Championships. The event will feature a 14-17-year-old 5k and 7.5k, under-20 5k and 10k as well as relays for both age groups.

The six-day camp will take place in conjunction with the 2019 UANA Junior Open Water Swimming Championships. Past swimmers to attend the camp have gone on to make the U.S. National Team and World Championships roster. Just this month, three past attendees– Haley Anderson (2010 selection), Ashley Twichell (2011 selection) and Erica Sullivan (2016 selection)– competed at the FINA Open Water World Championships in Yeosu, South Korea, where Anderson and Twichell earned Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 invitations by finishing in the top-10 in the 10k and Sullivan finished fifth in the 25k.

Athletes were chosen via a selection process centered around the results from the 2019 National Open Water Championships, which took place in Miami this past May. The top two male and female finishers under 20 years old in both the 10k and 5k were selected, and the top two male and female finishers between 14-17 years old were selected from the junior 5k. Lastly, six male and six female athletes who are under 20 years old as of December 31, 2019 were selected off of the top times of 2018 in the SWIMS database based on USA Swimming Power Points in the 1500 LCM freestyle.

Additionally, Coach Andrew Eckhart will be attending the camp.  Coach Andrew has been leading our open water group since Fall of 2018.  At the 2019 Open Water Nationals the Sharks brought 3 athletes to compete: Alicia Davie, Alex Gusev, Zach Szmania.  Coach Andrew is excited about the opportunity to attend this camp in learn from the other coaches and athletes in attendance.
