"Night one of the 2019 Plantation Sectionals kicked off with the women’s 1500 free, men’s 800 free, women’s and men’s 200 medley relay, women’s and men’s 200 free relay, and a mixed-gender medley and free relay. Fourteen-year-old Michaela Mattes kicked off the meet with a win in the 1500 free, going 17:04.52. That cuts 30 seconds off her lifetime best in the event. Michaela Mattes, 14, Sarasota YMCA Sharks (SYS-FL): 200 IM, 2:04.27 – Mattes closed 2017 with a 2:09.51 in the 200 IM. A year later, in December 2018, she dropped over two seconds to go 2:07.44. Then, two weeks ago, she shaved off nearly another second, posting a 2:06.69. Last weekend, in her first swim, Mattes went a then-best of 2:06.43. Later that day? Sarasota Shark Parker Schmidt gave his verbal commitment to the University of Eastern Illinois in Charleston. Two-time USA Swimming Scholastic All-American Brett Riley from Sarasota, Florida has announced his intention to swim for Purdue University next fall. “I chose Purdue because of the strong academic programs and their top notch athletics. She ended her high school career this month at the 2018 FHSAA Class 4A Championships, placing 10th in the 200 IM (2:07.64) and 15th in the 100 back (58.93).
