Steve Wood

Head Coach


Steven Wood is a ASCA certified level 3 Age Group and NCCA Coach with Level 4 administration schooling.

A native of Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio he was a OHSAA qualifier in 1985 in the 200 free who then continued swimming at the University of Mount Union.  A four-year letterman and six-time All-American for the Purple Raiders. At the time he finished swimming at Mount Union, he held the 100 Free and 200 Free individual records for 20 plus years and three relay school records, graduating with a degree in Sports Medicine.

Coach Wood was named Women’s OAC coach of the year in 1990 and helped contribute to several Purpler Raiders achieving All-American status.  In 2014 the honor of being inducted into the University of Mount Union M-Club Hall of Fame was completed.

His coaching passion, success and credentials enabled the growth and development of the Shelby County Parks & Recreation team in Shelbyville, KY.  Selected as a KY All-Star Coach and 1993 served as a KY LSC zone coach. 1994-1995 Became head coach of the Gillette Gators swim team in Gillette, WY a world Class 50 meter facility. Successfully completing 2 consecutive SC and LC LSC championships, several Junior National qualifiers. Served as the LSC head zone coach in Maui, HI as was selected as WY LSC high altitude coach at the Olympic training center, Colorado Springs.

From 1996 to 1999 became the Head Age Coach for Parkway Swim Club in St. Louis, Missouri.  Over the 3 years, helped and contributed to the development of 11 National AG top 16 times and 23 new SC & LC team records. Honors also included Age Group development speaking engagements at the OTC and in 1998 selected as a ASCA World Clinic guest speaker Atlanta GA. on drugs and an alcohol in competitive swimming and freestyle techniques for healthy stable shoulders. Coach Wood took time off to pursue a career with AT&T upon moving back to Ohio, but It wasn't long before he was recruited to build a team in Brunswick, OH. Developed BEST from 13 swimmers to 90 plus in just a couple of years.  But the sunshine of Florida led him Tampa and is excited to be part of GTSA and to carrying on the philosophy to teach first ~ train second”.
