Frequently Asked Questions
Fleet Masters Swimming exists to promote the sport of swimming amongst adults of all ages and ability levels. Our goal is to help people of all backgrounds become more proficient in the water and to learn to love the sport of swimming.
Who Can Join our Program: Anyone 18 or over who can swim 25 meters without having to stop may start in our program. We train beginners, fitness swimmers, triathletes and former/current competitive swimmers. There are competitions offered during the year but they are completely optional. The people involved in United States Masters Swimming are some of the best people you'll ever meet!
Costs involved: There is a $25 club registration fee (that will be assessed immediately upon registration on our site). There will also be a $25 yearly membership fee (billed in January each year) and an additional requirement to become a member of United States Masters Swimming for the year when joining our team:
http://www.usms.org/reg/content/benefits - link to join. USMS membership is $70 each year.
You may not become a member of Fleet Masters Swimming without a USMS membership. |
Regular Masters pay $70 a month for as many coached practices as you like each month. Practice times are located on the Calendar tab of this site. Make sure you check practice times weekly to see if there have been any changes. Also, be on the lookout for any emails that signal practice changes.
Cy Tri, SBR members pay $45 a month for two coached practices a week. Swimmers in this group MUST have a current membership with the Cy Tri or SBR triathlon club to take advantage of this rate. Swimmers must have their USMS and club registration current. Please send current proof of registration with Cy Tri or SBR when you choose this option.
Lap Swim Only members pay $60 a month to come swim laps during any designated lap swim practice times without coach direction. Note - you must swim during a designated masters practice time with a coach on the deck for supervision. While our lanes are not overly crowded, we will offer lap swim times at all practices. If we get short on lane space in the evenings or mornings we may have to restrict open lap swim times. Lap swim members may have to share lane space if we have limited lane space and lots of swimmers.
Trial Practice: We welcome potential new members to come join us for one free practice before signing up. Please go to the TRIAL SWIM FORM tab on our website to print a form, fill it out and bring it with you to your free trial practice. Once you decide you want to swim with Fleet Masters, you need to register with the team before your next swim (registration tab located on home page). You then have 30 days from your first swim to get signed up with USMS (at USMS.com). Try to get to your trial practice a little early so the coach can collect your form and answer any questions you may have. Check the calendar for any practice changes before you come.
Registration: Please be aware that your credit card will be charged a $25 club registration fee immediatey upon completing your registration and that dues will be automatically assessed monthly once you are registered. Our billing is done by an automated computer system and once you have registered you will be billed for monthly dues. Please wait to register for the team until after you have completed your trial practice and know you want to swim with us!
What you need to bring: A competitive swimsuit will be the best choice for practice. Baggy shorts or a recreational bathing suit is acceptable but it will make swimming more difficult. A quality pair of goggles are also highly recommended as chlorinated water can be hard on the eyes and its so much easier to see where you are going with goggles! Mirrored goggles are useful in outdoor pools (especially when we work on backstroke and the sun is out). You may have to try out different kinds of goggles to find the kind that work best for you. Each face is shaped differently. You may also want a swim cap to protect your hair from pool chemicals. We have kickboards and pull buoys available at the pool. We highly recommend you get a pair of swim fins for certain training sets. There are several different kinds of fins; short, medium length and long. If you are unsure of what would work best for you, please aske your choach. All of these items are available at D&J Sports - located at Spring Cypress and 249. They offer a discount if you mention that you are a member of FLEET.
Locker Rooms/showers: We have shower and locker facilities available but ask that swimmers spend a maximum of 10 minutes getting ready after practice (especially in the mornings and evenings) so that coaches can lock up the facilities. Your coaches have work and kids to get off to school in the mornings and would very much appreciate you being very quick in the locker rooms!
Facebook: We have a facebook page! https://www.facebook.com/pages/Fleet-Masters-Swimming/247028708684238 Come check out what's happening with us. This is a good way to find out if there is any updated practice information if you are not yet signed up with the team and receiving team emails.

Withdrawl Policies: Should you decide to suspend or cancel your membership, please contact us in writing (email is fine) at least 24 hours before the first of the month so we have time to suspend your account in the system before the next automated billing occurs.
Once you register, your account remains active and you will be billed monthly until you ask us to inactivate your account. We do not offer refunds or credit card reversals so please clearly communicate your wish to cancel your automated billing in a timely manner (at least 48 hours before the first day of the month for which you do not want to be billed) should you decide to suspend or withdraw your membership. Thank you!
