A funny thing happened at the end of the Short-course season. When I first arrived at RICE we were a group of swimmers. No one knew each others names outside of a set of friends, we didn't have enough swimmers for relays and the emphasis for many was an activity and not a sport. We have come along way from those first few years in the indoor pool. Grit is a continuing conversation around the pool deck. In a sport of hard-work it is those that can endure the most...

I can remember several years ago when we would have only a few swimmers in the 500 free on Friday night at a meet. On February 21, we had more than 20 swimmers in the 500 free. We also had many swimmers in the 500 free at the Sr. Champs meet this past weekend. Rice Aquatics has definitely grown as a team. At the Short Course Champs 1 meet (February 21-23), our swimmers ended their short course season with many outstanding races. We had several swimmers achieve TAGS cuts, others...

Our 8 & unders shined throughout the meet and achieved many best times and new time standards. Some swimmers swam in as many as 7 races, including relays, during the 4-hour meet. With 5 of our 6 relays achieving team best times (and the other only 0.3 seconds away), we are truly seeing the growth and development of our team. The swimmers did a great job of talking with their coaches before and after each swim, and focusing on their races. With so many races close together, it kept the...

With this growth we have been able to offer more defined groups and hire more coaches to train and coach our young athletes. It is our the goal at RICE Aquatics to have the best swim club inside of the loop for every age and level of swimmer....
