26 YEARS STRONG

August 2019

Swim Friends,

Welcome to the registration page for the 2019 Fall/2020 Winter season with Academy Swim Club – Hawaii (est. 1993).  This season will be defined as August thru the end of February 2020. 2020, wow! That has a great ring to it. Soon the Olympic rings will be on display for all the world to see in Tokyo Japan. ASC is a part of the USA Swimming programs which feeds the USA Olympic Team. Go ASC!

Academy Swim Club (ASC) has grown over the years in part due to the efforts of the coaching staff to support the members as they strive to become better swimmers, teammates, and members of the community.  The aim of our coaching staff is to provide a program that builds confidence in our young athletes so that they are armed with tools to help them in all aspects of life. They will receive swimming skills and race training but also, and more importantly, opportunities to enhance their character, grit, perseverance, kindness, ability to thrive in adversity and being a supportive teammate and friend

As a USA Swimming member club USA Swimming, we are a part of the system that provides opportunities to advance to the highest level of competition. As a club, we steadily increased the number of swimmers who’ve reached the A-AA (Hawaii Jr. Champs and Invitational), State Championship (AAA), Zone, Speedo Senior Sectional and the USA Futures competition on the mainland. This past year, ASC swimmers exceeded the USA Swimming National Averages for  improvement in all four strokes and the IM. This is a testament to the fun, yet focused work our swimmers and coaches do together.

What’s new with memberships with ASC?

  1. US Safe Sport Center - Required by Parents/Guardians for Registration

    1. Familiarize yourself with the ASC websites Parent Info/Safe Sport drop-down menu.

    2. Take the USA Swimming Online Safe Sport for Parents course from the PARENT INFO/SAFE SPORT drop down menu. Print your certificate and turn it into the pool office or email to mnoetzel.swim@gmail.com. This is a requirement for ASC membership.

    3. Read the ASC Minor Athlete Abuse Prevention Program (MAAPP) listed under the PARENT INFO/SAFE SPORT. This is a requirement of USA Swimming.

    4. From the PARENT INFO/SAFE SPORT DROP DOWN, click on the MAAPP ACKNOWLEDGEMENT FORM. Print it, sign and drop it off at the pool office. There will be a file in there for completed forms. This is a requirement for teams from USA Swimming.

  1. Calendar and Schedule

    1. This year, Hawaiian Swimming has moved the AAA Short Course (SCY) State Championship from December 2019 to February 2020. This means that our season will balance more to roughly 6 months (September-February) of competition in 25-yard (SCY) pools and 6 months (March-August) of competition in 50-meter pools. This type of plan was promoted and approved by Hawaiian Swimming Inc. the governing body for our sport in Hawaii. Hawaiian Swimming Inc. is a member of USA Swimming Inc., the governing body for amateur swimming in the USA.

    2. Swim practices will now be offered throughout December and January with with short breaks in the practice schedule. The dates of such breaks will vary slightly by groups and will consider holidays.

    3. High School age swimmers who will compete for both the club and their school team (December-February) will have competitions with both teams offered.

  2. Pricing will now reflect a balance in months (roughly six/season).

  3. 12/under Swim Parents - Reminder No Tech Suits beginning 9/1/19.

Hawaiian Swimming Board of Directors voted to implement the Tech Suit Ban for 12&Under athletes in Hawaiian Swimming Sanctioned meets starting this coming September 1, 2019. This is in concert with many other western zones LSC's, and with Western Zones this August 2019. The Rule Book for USA-Swimming reads:

102.8.F No Technical Suits shall be worn by any 12 & Under USA Swimming athlete member in competition at any sanctioned, approved or observed meet. [Effective September 1, 2020 {for USA-Swimming}]

(1) Exceptions to the foregoing restrictions are only for Junior Nationals, U.S. Open, National Championships, and Olympic Trials.

(2) A Technical Suit is one that has the following components:

a. Any suit with any bonded or taped seams regardless of its fabric or silhouette; or

b. Any suit with woven fabric extending past the hips.

(Note: WOVEN FABRIC — A suit with woven fabric and sewn seams that does not extend below the hips is permitted.)  (Note: KNIT FABRIC — A suit with knit fabric and sewn seams not extending below the knees is permitted.)

Click this link for more information on this ban from USA-Swimming.

YOUR ARE A RETURNING MEMBER IF...

1.   You are considered a returning member if you were registered for the Spring/Summer 2019 season.  Please make sure your account is paid in full from last season. You may pay your balance from Spring/Summer when registering for this upcoming season.

2.   Please note the limited spots in each group. Please register and settle your account at the time of registration  to secure your spot on the team. We have swimmers on a waitlist eager to join ASC who are hoping to fill any available spots.

3. Please update your swimmer’s account, (Medical, Insurance, T-Shirt, other...).

4. ONLY use your existing account when registering. If you don’t, you will create another account and it will confuse all of us and create additional work for us all. Register for same group unless your child’s coach has reached out to you.

Past ASC Members but not ACTIVE? If you were registered with ASC in the past but not during the 2019 Spring/Summer Season, please reach out to mnoetzel.swim@gmail.com to see if there is space available for your swimmer’s group. If yes, I will reactivate your account so you can register.

New Swimmers/Families to ASC

A Swim Assessment Might Be Required

Assessment Appointments - New swimmers to ASC who have not competed before with a USA Swimming club, or participated in one of our Summer Swim Academy Sessions, MUST sign up for an assessment appointment. This will help us properly place your swimmer with the correct group to better ensure success and enjoyment.  Please contact Coach Sarie via email  sarie.swim1@gmail.com  to arrange for an assessment appointment.

1.   When you register with ASC you will create your own new private account on the registration site.

This account will then allow you to do many more things with the club in the future, such as; see your child’s performance times, to easily declare for swim meets, sign-up for swim team jobs, receive important updates from coaches, and more.

Parent Involvement

  • Parent Volunteer Hours - This season we will post a fair number of expected hours of service at home and away meets, with an option to buyout ($$$). Parent involvement at swim meets, both home and away, is something that every team has. Some, more than others. But, as all clubs around the country work to provide an environment for swimmer success, parents are a large part of the workforce for events. Thank you, for your support. More info will come out including who the “volunteer” coordinator will be. That person will help track hours of service so that we can keep things fair.

  • Support Your Swimmer’s Mindset

    • Your swimmer through positive encouragement. Our website has a drop-down tab with some resources for you to help you balance the act of being a parent with a swimmer who wants to get better.  Please read them. There are some great resources on MINDSET and how a GROWTH MINDSET applies to our sport. To get better in swimming, it’s a process and each swimmer has a different learning and development timeline. Please talk to your child’s coach if you have any questions about their rate of improvement.

      • Pool Covers

        • Please assist as often as you can. This past season, Fall 2018, there were a handful of parents who were consistent each night and we valued their efforts to keep the pool water warm. However, there were over 100 families on the club and roughly just 5% helped.

      • Timing/Officiating

        • Without your support to time or officiate, competitions can’t happen. Hawaiian Swimming actually dictates this. For those of you who have gone to off-island championships know that we get told how many timers we need and when they need to work. Hawaiian Swimming sets a standard ratio (# of Swimmers/Official) for teams to follow and ASC gets fined each year for not meeting our requirements.  Many thanks to our current officials. Michelle Sorensen, Michelle Weyrick, Ignacio Soler, Laura Robertson, Robyn Scarth, Nani Barretto, and Melissa Schad. Should you be interested in learning how to be an official and this can be with running the timer system, not just being a deck official, please reach out to Mark at mnoetzel.swim@gmail.com.

  • TEAM SPONSORSHIP

  • If you would like your business to appear as a sponsor of our team, please reach out to Mark. Your business would appear in either a vertical column or along the bottom of our website with a direct link to your webpage if you’d like.  A sample of what other teams have for sponsors can be sent to you. We will be having a parent support us with our efforts in this area and you’ll hear from her and the coaching staff later

Instruction outside of Academy Swim Club

Lastly, by registering with Academy Swim Club you are agreeing with our policy of not having other swimming instruction for your ASC registered swimmer without checking first with her/his ASC Coach. Coaching that is coming to an athlete from multiple directions often disrupts a learning path that ASC coaches have chosen. This will help ensure the best opportunities for swimmer advancement. Failure to do so may result in removal from ASC.
