Coaches and Directors
Coach Colin is one the founding members of the DUBUQUE AREA SWIMMIN' HURRICANES. He and several parents formed the team in the Fall of 1991. Coach Colin is a Dubuque native. He graduated from the University of Iowa, with a B.B.A., Class of 1986. While at the University of Iowa, Doug was an assistant coach with the Iowa City Swim Club. Upon returning to Dubuque, he coached the Dubuque YMCA Swim Club for 4 years, prior to forming D.A.S.H. Doug is also the former Head Swimming & Diving Coach and Aquatics Director at Loras College. Doug is ASCA Level 4 certified and has been selected as the ISI Age Group Coach of the Year in ’07 and ISI Senior Coach of the Year in ’08 & ’09, and, the Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Coach of the Year in ’04 & ’07.
Doug and his wife, Marie, have three sons, Benjamin, John, and William, all members of DASH at one time or another.
Jake is a Dubuque native, graduating from Wahlert HS in 2001. During HS he swam for Dubuque Senior (co-op program), qualifying for the Iowa HS State meet all four years. He then went on to swim three years at Loras College prior to injuries cutting his career short. During his Duhawk career, Jake was a member of two record setting relays. His primary group with DASH is the BRONZE Group. Jake is the former Head Girls Swim Coach at Senior H.S.
Outside of DASH, Jake is an instructor at NICC and UW-Platteville.
Jake and his wife Angie are proud "parents" of their dog Sully.
Tasia Guiter is a 2003 graduate of Ottumwa High School and a 2007 graduate of Loras College. As a Duhawk, she swam for coach Doug Colin, and is the former record holder in the 100 backstroke and three relays. Tasia graduated with a major in Exercise Science and a minor in math, and is currently employed as the Wellness Coordinator at Luther Manor Communities. She has been coaching for DASH since 2006.


Ben is a graduate of Dubuque Senior HS and The University of Iowa with degrees in Journalism and Sport / Recreation Management. At Senior, he was a 4-time state qualifier, 3-time All-State honoree, finishing runner-up as a member of the 400 Free Relay as a sophomore and in both the 200 & 500 Freestyles as a Senior and still holds the Rams 500 Free school record. While a Hawkeye swimmer, Ben was a 3-time Academic All-Big Ten, recipient of the Big Ten Sportsmanship Award as a senior and was named winner of the NCAA Jim McKay Scholarship. He is currently working on his Masters degree in Sport / Recreation Management and a law degree at The University of Iowa.

Rick is a Dubuque native, graduating from Hempstead HS in 1994, where he was a four year Iowa HS State qualifier. He then went on to a four year career at St. Mary's University (MN), where he still holds five school records (200, 500, 1000 Free, 200 Fly, & 400 IM). He is a former swimmer under Coach Colin, beginning at the YMCA and moving to DASH when the team started. He also coached with Coach Colin at Loras College for two years.
Rick is a Wellness & Recreation teacher in the Dubuque Community School system and the Head Boys Swim Coach at Hempstead HS, where he has been selected as State Coach of the Year in 2014, 4x District Coach of the year, and 2x MVC Divisional Coach of the year.
In 2006, he was inducted into the Saint Mary’s University (MN) Athletic Hall of Fame and in the spring of 2017 was elected to the Presidency of the Iowa High School Swim Coaches Association.
For DASH, Rick coaches the Gold and HS Camp groups during the summer.
He and his wife, Kylie, have a son, Ty, and daughter, Emmy.


Todd is a Dubuque native, graduating from Senior in 1994. During HS he swam for two years, qualifying for state in both years (100 butterfly and 200/400 freestyle relays). He also was quarterback and captain of the football team, and qualified for state track in the shot put and sprint relays. Todd played safety at Drake University for two years before transferring back to Loras to swim his final two seasons of college. He was a school record holder at Loras on the 200 & 400 Medley Relays (fly leg). He went on to be an Assistant Women’s and Assistant & Head Men’s Coach at Dubuque Senior from 1997 – 2001. He later would become a Grad Assistant Coach under Doug Colin at Loras College while earning his master’s degree. He will be inducted into the Dubuque Senior Athletic Hall of Fame in 2021. Todd is the “Swiss-Army-Knife” for DASH filling in wherever needed over his aggregate 10 years of coaching with DASH.
Outside of DASH, Todd is the Safety and Occupational Health Manager for John Deere Dubuque. When he isn’t at a pool with his two daughters who swim for DASH, he’s at a court, field, or track supporting all three of his children.
Todd and his wife, Meg, have three children, Jack, Molly, and Annie.

Coach Janet is a 6-time Iowa HS State Champion at Des Moines Roosevelt and a member of the Iowa HS Swim Coaches Association Hall of Fame. Following her HS career, Janet continued swimming at the University of Kansas. At KU, she was an AIAW (previous to NCAA offering women's sports) All-American!!
Janet and her late husband Don had all five of their children, Louise, Donny, Jack, Charlie and Olivia, swimming for Team DASH at one time or another.
Janet is the Executive Director for Luther Manor in Dubuque and Asbury.
