Meet the coaches

Dave Joensen Head Coach

Dave has been involved in competitive swimming for 50 years. He first joined a swim team when he was 10 years old and swam on both a club team and high school team.  After high school, he retired from competitive swimming, but still swam on his own as well as on a college intramural team as a way to stay in shape.  During college he also participated in triathlons.  He first started coaching in 1986 as a way of staying involved in the sport.

Dave has coached all over the country and at different schools and clubs. His first coaching job was at Ames High School.  He also coached swimming and taught chemistry at Dowling Catholic High School. Dave has coached club teams in Austin TX, Ames IA, Blairstown NJ, Augusta GA, and in the Des Moines Area.  In Des Moines, I’ve coached at Central Iowa Aquatics, Des Moines Swim Federation, LifeTime Swim Team, and now Johnston Blaze.

He enjoys coaching all levels of swimmers.  The teams he’s coached have won over 40 Iowa team championships. He also coached over a thousand individual or relay state champions.  The swimmers he’s coached have set over one hundred Iowa state swimming records. He’s also coached  Jr National, National, and Olympic Trials qualifiers.  He has coached several nationally ranked age group swimmers including 4 swimmers who ranked #1 in the country in their respective age group and event.
