IFLY Programming During Closure

Week of 11/30/2020

***IFLY is continually working with UI and Recreational Services to ensure we can provide more opportunities for our swimmers.  This takes time as we are not the only programming run out of the CRWC and FH.  Please be patient and know as soon as we get additional information we will send it.  Relevant information will be posted in this tab, please check it frequently.***

***According to Governor's Proclamation, all youth activities, including swimming, are suspended until 12/10/2020.  Please know that IFLY is working with UI, Rec Services, and Iowa Swimming, INC. to get back into the water as soon as possible.  More information to come.***

Recreational Services Lap Swimming Opportunities:

In order to register for lap swim, an account needs to be created for your swimmer by Rec Services staff only, which can only be done by emailing [email protected].   Regardless of membership status, unless your swimmer has purchased something else from Rec Services, they will not have an account.  Any further issues/questions need to be directed to [email protected].

Here are specific instructions about how to reserve lap swim lanes:

  1. Go to the University of Iowa Recreational Services website:https://recserv.uiowa.edu/
  2. On the upper right side, click Online Registration
  3. On that page, click Log In located in the upper right corner (if you have not created an account, click on Sign Up and create an account).  Accounts created by IFLY families will be verified by the Recreational Services staff.
  4. After you have logged in, scroll down to Aquatic Registrations and click on the icon
  5. On the next page, you will be able to select either the CRWC or FH location
  6. Once you have selected a location, the next page will display the times and how many spots are available. Click on your desired time and complete the reservation.
  7. Once you arrive at either the CRWC or FH for your reserved lap swim time, present your IFLY ID card to enter the facility.  You must have a current IFLY membership to be granted access to either facility.
  8. IFLY swimmers that reserve lanes for lap swimming and do not show up are subject to Recreational Services “No Show Policy.”

Additionally, the coaching staff has posted pool workouts on the IFLY website under the IFLY Covid-19 Programming tab, as well as Zoom links for our dryland workouts.  Please be sure you are logged in before accessing the IFLY Covid-19 tab: https://www.teamunify.com/team/iauif/page/covid-19-programming

IFLY Return to the Pool:

**Please be aware that the fall schedule has been updated to reflect the slight time change for the PM Practices.  The 4:30-5:30 PM practice time has been changed to 4:45-5:45 PM.  All other practice times/locations remain the same.  All team calendars are current.

Updated IFLY Fall Schedule

It is imperative that all swimmers are on time for practice.  The practice times on the team calendar and on the above schedule represent the time in the water.  Rec Services will continue to allow swimmers to check into the building 15 minutes prior to the start of practice.

**Effective Monday, 9/21/2020 the 4:30-5:30 PM practice time will be moved to 4:45-5:45 PM.  All other practice times and locations remain the same.  The team calendars will be updated.

**Please note that programing may change based on the University's guidance as well as state and local guidelines.**

**As a reminder, the move-ups that were planned for 4/2020 will NOT happen at this time.  These invitations will be honored at a later date.**

The postponed move-ups will happen on October 5, 2020.  Please make sure you order the required equipment needed this can be found on the IFLY website under "Training Groups."

***ALL IFLY Swimmers are required to wear their masks on deck.  They are to remain on your faces until right before you get in the water.  After practice, they need to be put back on immediately upon exiting the pool.  In order for our phased reopening to be a success and to prevent any setbacks, we need 100% compliance.***

IFLY's New Sponsor, A3, will be hosting a Zoom Meeting for all IFLY families.  The owner, Dan Meinholz, will introduce his company, the A3 brand, and our partnership.

Helpful Hints Taken from the first few phases:

  1. BE ON TIME...and have all of your equipment, we cannot lend any equipment of any kind.
  2. Please have your swimmer use the bathroom prior to coming to practice, as we only have an hour of water time.
  3. Practice social distancing throughout the Recreational Services facilities.
  4. Exit the facility using the main entrances, athletes are not to use the side entrances, this is coming from the University of Iowa and Recreational Services.
  5. All athletes must wear masks until they get into the pool.  Bring a Zip-Lock bag to put your mask in at the edge of the pool so it stays dry.  The white meet ropes have been put up to hang your masks off if (these ropes are disinfected after each practice).
  6. If you need a board/buoy, get it on the way to your assigned lane.
  7. When watching practice from spectator seating, please keep sit in designated areas only and keep family members with you.  Every time you move it is another contact point that needs disinfecting.

Phase 3 Practice Schedule:  IFLY Team Calendars are updated.  Be aware of any practice time/place changes from the previous phases.

General Reminders and Reminders for the Field House:

  1. At the FH, there is no good/dry place to put your masks, bring a ZipLock baggie to the pool deck with you to place your mask in prior to getting into the water.
  2. BE ON TIME, arrive and leave in your suits, use the bathroom prior to practice...we only have an hour in the water.
  3. IFLY will NOT have access to water fountains or locker rooms.  The FH is HOT, bring a full water bottle.
  4. Parents/guardians/spectators still need to sign up using the Recreational Services Online Reservation System.  This cannot be done on the day of or at the facility as you're walking in.  Please remember, if you have not done so already, you must complete the questionnaire (regardless of your membership status) at the following link before you have the ability to use the online reservation system: https://uiowa.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_1FxixcuEfh2dPQF
  5. Once at the spot in the stands, please stay there and keep family members from wandering the stands.  Anything that is touched becomes something that needs to be disinfected.  We need to keep touchpoints to a minimum.
  6. Swimmers/spectators are NOT allowed to leave the FH pool from the emergency exit on the pool deck.  This is a University of Iowa Recreational Services policy and we must abide by it.
  7. The FH will have a separate entrance and exit for the facility.  Again, this has been established by the University of Iowa and we must abide by it.
    1. Entrance:  Same doors as before - southeast side of the building.
    2. Exit:  Northeast corner of the facility.  You will have to walk past the main deck and go to the north side of the building.  Follow the signage.
  8. Parents/Guardians/Spectators are NOT allowed on the pool deck at the FH Pool.

If you choose to get back in the water, here's what we know about local facilities.  Please remember, this is strictly voluntary.  If this is your first time getting in the water...TAKE IT SLOW...just get in and feel the water.  You've been out for almost 3 months, so you will not be at the same yardage/intensity you were in March.  Use this opportunity to focus on feeling the water and swimming with perfect technique (what would your coach say?).  If you draw a blank, try doing a modified meet warm-up.  If you have questions please email Coach Nate, Coach Tanja, or Coach Chris for specifics.

This is completely voluntary (and not coach-lead) and must be done with extreme caution, swimming in open water is a completely different experience than swimming in a pool.  Swimmers must be directly supervised by a parent in a boat/kayak no more than 10 ft distance from swimmer.

Some of our swimmers have been going to Lake Macbride to swim.  Here are some shared pointers:

  1. 1. A kayaker for every 2 swimmers. Kayaker must have own lifejacket and one for each swimmer.
  2. 2. Recommended to wear a bright orange swim buoy so she is visible to others.
  3. 3. The water temp is about 55-60, wear a full wetsuit.
  4. 4. All open water swimmers must register each swim past the swim buoys with the DNR. https://www.iowadnr.gov/Portals/idnr/uploads/parks/PDFs/swimming_registration.pdf. email to [email protected]

Open Water Info:

T-Shirt Contest:

Click on the T-Shirt Designs to see all 23 t-shirt ideas!

The t-shirt designs are in, we have 21 t-shirt ideas to pick from, nice job IFLYers!  Here's how it will work.  I will set up a Zoom meeting with each training group.  At that meeting, the group will choose their favorite t-shirts (you must be present at the Zoom meeting to vote).  After those meetings, we will have 8 semi-finalists.  These 8 t-shirts will be sent out to the entire team and the t-shirt with the most votes wins!  That design will then be sent to Splash for final touch up and will be available for purchase.

IFLYers!!  When was the last time you disinfected your equipment???  DO SO NOW!

"Narrated by Emmy-winner Julianna Margulies, The Last Gold is a feature-length documentary film that reveals one of the greatest untold stories in Olympic swimming history. Forty years ago, at the 1976 Montreal Games, a team of doped East German athletes thrashed their rivals from the United States, until a remarkable final race.

The central player was a transcendent American athlete denied her due and since lost in time: Shirley Babashoff. Babashoff and her teammates were surrogates in a Cold War struggle, who battled a tragic conspiracy with a blazing honesty and a ferocious, endless tenacity. In 1976, the U.S. Olympic swim team entered the Games in Montreal looking forward to its usual dominance. The men did not disappoint, delivering the most dominant performance in Olympic swimming history. They won every race but one, and in that race won the silver and bronze medals.

For the women, it was a completely different story. They were overwhelmed by an East German machine that had emerged on the world stage leading up to the Games with frighteningly fast performances. In a competition where 15 American records were set, the U.S. women had only four silver medals and one bronze medal to show for it. After an entire competition of disappointing results, winning no races and facing a critical media that heaped on additional pressure, the U.S. women finally came together to do as a team what they could not do individually. It was the final race when four women stepped to the blocks in an attempt to do what nobody thought possible... win The Last Gold."

IFLY Challenge:  Complete Safe Sport Class.  This class takes about 10-15 minutes to complete.  We are required to have 10% of our households complete this course, this means about 25 adults and 25 athletes (class is appropriate for swimmers 12&O).  All parents, officials, coaches, and athletes are invited!  So far, we’ve had 1 parent and 3 athletes complete this course…let's see how many we can get by the end of the week!  For our swimmers who are under 12, you can  print off and complete an activity book from the IFLY website under “Safe Sport.”  Once you’ve taken the course, post a fun picture on the IFLY Parent Group Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/groups/1653243618279056/) to let me know you did it!  If you’re working in the activity book, post a fun picture of you working on it or a completed page to the IFLY Parent Group Facebook page (make sure your parents are aware of what’s being posting).

Helpful hints:  Once on the USA Swimming Learn page, click on “Courses” at the top of the page.  Along the left side of “Courses” narrow down your search by clicking on the appropriate “For” and then clicking on “SafeSport under “Topic.”  Once you've chosen the appropriate course, click on the “Add to Cart."  Even though there is no charge for these classes you still need to “Check Out.”  Once you’ve checked out the course will appear on your “Dashboard” and is ready to go!
