2017-18 marked the graduation of the Bearsharktopus Aquatics Swim Club's first-ever Alumni Members. We graduated three BASC team members who began college swimming careers in the 2019-2020 season. We also graduated another member in 2019, and two more in 2021! Below you can find history on each of our alumni, including links to their colleges and college media outlets, so you can follow their careers and bright futures. 

Annalise Harms (Member 2019-2021)

Bio: Annalise Harms started swimming competitively year-round after taking swim lessons as a toddler. She swam for SUSA and YMCA before finding a home on Bearsharktopus in 2019. The following year she found a new passion; coaching swimmers on the team. Annie also swam four years at Glenwood High School and was a team captain her senior year. She graduated from GHS in 2021, where she not only swam but participated in other activities. Annie was a three-year member of the Glenwood Student Council where she served as constitution committee chair and vice-president. She was also involved in Key Club, Foreign Language Club, and working with special needs students. Annie will attend the University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee in the Fall of 2021.

Bio: Dawsen Loafman began his competitive swimming career in 2016 with the Litchfield BOLTZ, after a summer of recreational swimming with the Montgomery County Sharks. In 2017, Dawsen joined BASC and soon after qualified for the 50 freestyle in regionals, which led him further into the lifestyle of competitive swimming. Dawsen also competed for his high school at sectionals and proceeded to graduate from Nokomis High School in 2021. Dawsen will attend Millikin University in Decatur in the fall as a member of their swim team.

Bio: After taking swim lessons as a baby, Sydney started swimming for her summer team at eight years old. She started swimming year-round for Boltz Swim Team in 2015 and joined Bearsharktopus in 2017 as part of our Hillsboro satellite team. Sydney also swam for her high school, competing in IHSA Sectionals her junior and senior year. She graduated from Litchfield High School in 2019, where she was involved in extracurriculars. Over her four years of high school, Sydney participated in marching band, jazz band, pep band, and orchestra pits. She also played soccer, making the All-Conference team her sophomore, junior, and senior year, and participated in Scholastic Bowl. Sydney will attend the University of Oregon this fall as a trumpet performance major to pursue a career as an orchestral trumpet player.                                                                                                                  

Sarah McLaughlin   (Member 2016 to 2018)

Bio: Sarah McLaughlin is a 2018 graduate of Springfield Southeast High School. Starting as a beginner swimmer in 2014, Sarah swam as a captain on her high school team for four years, and participated on BASC for three years. During her time on BASC, Sarah was also very involved in the community and at her school. She received both the Spartan Scholars award and the Illinois State Scholars Award, and was a part of many school clubs and groups, including marching band, National Honors Society, and the Superintendent’s Student Roundtable. Sarah was also a member of the relay teams that broke two SSHS College Distance records and was a member of the CS8 academic all-conference team for three years. Now, Sarah is studying Biology at Carthage College with the hope of attending medical school.

Bio: Gavin started swimming lessons when he was a toddler because he loved being in the water so much. He joined the summer swim team at the Knight’s of Columbus when he was 10 years old and began year around competitive swimming that fall.  He joined the Springfield YMCA swim team at age 11 where he earned several Illinois YMCA state cuts. Gavin joined BASC in 2016 where he earned several meet high point awards and time cuts for Illinois Senior State (both long course and short course), Speedo Sectionals (both long course and short course), and Central Zone Open Water Championships.  At USA Illinois Senior State Championships (SC) Gavin swam the 1000 and 1650 free, 400 IM, 200 fly, and 200 back.  He swam the 500, 1000 and 1650 free, 400 IM and 200 fly at Speedo Sectionals, and the 5k at Open Water Zones. Gavin volunteered at his church and in the community serving at Friend in Deed/Contact Ministries throughout his swimming carrer. Gavin graduated from Mountain View Academy Homeschool in 2018 and was awarded the Arthur Holmes Faith and Learning Scholarship Award and the Presidential Leadership Scholarship Award from Wheaton College where he is swimming on the Wheaton College Swim and Dive Team and studying Applied Health Science.

Bio: Sydney has always enjoyed swimming and started swim lessons as an infant. She began swimming competitively for the Springfield YMCA (SPY) when she was 8 years old, earning several Illinois YMCA state cuts during her tenure at SPY. In high school, Sydney represented Southeast High School Swim and Dive Team. She holds 6 school records (100 Back, 200 Back, 200 IM, 400 IM, 400 Medley Relay and 800 Free Relay) and the CS8 Conference record for the 100 back, breaking the 1994 CS8 Conference record in her junior and senior years. She was All-Conference Athlete all 4 years of high school and on the All-Area Swim Team for 2 years. She was in the National Honor Society and for the 3 eligible years, Academic All-Conference Athlete. During her senior year, Sydney went to IHSA State in the 100 Backstroke and was recognized as Southeast's Co-Female Athlete of the Year. Sydney joined BASC in 2016 and in that time earned time cuts for USA Illinois Senior State Championships (100 and 200 Back), Speedo Sectionals (100 and 200 Back, 50, 100 and 200 Free), and Central Zone Open Water Championships. Sydney is studying nursing at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) and swims competitively for UIC Swim and Dive Team. She volunteers at the University of Illinois Hospital & Health Sciences System in her spare time.
