Kristin Verkler, Danville High School

When did you start swimming?  How did you get started?  What teams or clubs have you swum with?

I took my first swim lessons when I was 3-years old.  My sister was in water therapy, and I would go and watch her…I couldn’t wait to jump in the pool.  I swam in my first meet when I was 6-years old as a “Turtle.”  I started out swimming with the Turtles in Danville.  When that team folded, I swam for Storm Aquatics (back when they had practices in Champaign and Danville).  Then, Team Phoenix started up in Danville, I swam there until they lost their coach.  For the past 1 ½ years, I have been swimming with the Heat.

What are your college plans?  Will you swim?  What will you major in?

I will attend Illinois State University, majoring in Special Education.  I will definitely be swimming!

What have you learned from swimming?

I have learned several main things, first being that hard work, with a little fun mixed in, pays off.  Secondly, I have learned how to manage time between school, swimming, and friends, especially since I drive to Champaign from Danville.  Most importantly, I have learned to control what I can control, and don’t worry about the rest…thanks, Will!

What is your favorite swimming memory?

I have 2 favorite memories at this time:

  1. Girls High School Sectionals my Senior year, where I made 2 individual state cuts.
  2. Winning the 400 Free Relay at Long Course Senior State last summer with Audrey, Gabi, and Hannah.

Tell us something about yourself that people might find surprising or interesting.

I am a big hockey fan…especially Chicago Blackhawks.  I used to take ice skating lessons right after swim lessons, my hair was always wet, and finally my parents made me choose between swimming and skating…so glad I chose swimming.
