The Freeport Aquatic Swim Team offers training and practice groups for swimmers of all ages and ability levels. It is the goal of the Freeport Aquatic Swim Team to offer age specific training for all of our athletes geared towards challenging each individual and developing each individual to the best of THEIR abilities.
ELITE:
This training group offers full time swim training for the purpose of reaching the highest levels of competition the sport has to offer. Elite members aim at 100% attendance all year long and have a full meet schedule. Select Elite members are invited by the HEAD COACH to attend double practices (morning and evening) which include water and dry land training. The Elite group meets from 8 or more times per week (Coach’s decision) for an average of 2 hour sessions.
Minimum Age: 12*
Number of Practices Available: 8
Meet Attendance: At least one meet per month is strongly recommended (Championship meets are automatic
upon qualifying). Home meets are required.
Guidelines: Must be able to swim 10 X 100 on 1:20 OR have a senior cut in at least one event. Must attend at least
6 practices a week.
SENIOR:
This group is for our more advanced age group swimmers and our developing senior age swimmers. The SENIOR training group exposes each swimmer to a full training plan. Select SENIOR members are invited by the HEAD COACH to attend double practices (morning and evening) which include water and dry land training. The SENIOR group meets 9 or more times per week (Coach’s decision) for an average of 2 hour sessions.
Minimum Age: 12*
Number of Practices Available: 7-10
Meet Attendance: At least one meet per month is strongly recommended (Championship meets are automatic
upon qualifying). Home meets are required.
Guidelines: Must be able to swim 10 X 100 on 1:40. Must attend at least 6 practices a week.
Move Up Guidelines: Must be able to swim 10 X 100 on 1:20 OR have a senior cut in at least
one event to move up to ELITE.
COMPETITIVE:
At this level, practice begins leaning towards conditioning 60% to 70% with technique 30% to 40%. All aspects of competitive swimming are covered in this group from streamlining to breakdown of energy systems. This group will sometimes be asked to participate with the SENIOR or ELITE groups for special training. The Competitive group meets 5 or more times per week (Coach’s decision) for an average of 1 hour and 45 min. sessions.

Number of Practices Available: 5
Meet Attendance: At least one meet per month is strongly recommended (Championship meets are automatic
upon qualifying). Home meets are required.
Guidelines: Must be able to swim 10 X 100 on 2:00. Must attend at least 4 practices a week.
Move Up Guidelines: Must attend practices consistently.
Must be able to swim 10 X 100 on 1:40 to move up to SENIOR.
DEVELOPMENTAL:
This training group continues to reinforce the skills learned in the DEVELOPMENTAL group. The four basic swimming strokes are taught in their entirety. The swimmers are introduced to the racing skills; however 90% of this group is spent on stroke development and technique. The DEVELOPMENTAL group meets 5 times a week for 1 hour sessions. The swimmers in this group must be able to do flip turns and dive.
Minimum Age: 6*
Number of Practices Available: 5
Meet Attendance: Away meets recommended. Home meets required.
Move Up Guidelines: Must attend practices consistently.
Must be able to swim three strokes and have working knowledge of theremaining one.
Must be able to dive off the starting blocks and perform flip turns.
Must be able to read a pace clock.
Must be able to maintain a high level of intensity throughout practices.
NOVICE:
This training group is a continuance of the INTRO group. The swimmers in this group are still learning all of the strokes and basic swim team rules. The swimmers are introduced to starts and turns and some racing skills. 100% of this group is spent on stroke development and technique. The NOVICE group meets 4 times a week for 45 minutes.
Minimum Age: 4*
Number of Practices Available: 4
Meet Attendance: Not required. Home meets are encouraged.
Move Up Guidelines: Must have knowledge of all four strokes.
Must be working towards their starts and turns.
Must be able to swim 8 lengths of freestyle without stopping.
INTRO (Intro to Swim Team:
This group is designed to teach the basic rules and techniques needed to be on a swim team. The goal of this group is to get comfortable with the water. The INTRO group is only available to new FAST swimmers. After completing the 6 week course you will be moved to the NOVICE group (based on the coach’s decision). This INTRO group meets 4 days a week for 30 minutes. All aspects of the swim team are taught and encouraged.
Minimum Age: 4*
Number of Practices Available: 4
Meet Attendance: N/A
Move Up Guidelines: Once the 6 week course is complete you will move up to the DEVELOPMENTAL group.
Need to have knowledge of all 4 strokes.
Must be able to swim 4 lengths of freestyle without stopping.
*A minimum age is just a guideline and does not mean a swimmer will be moved up to a new group at that age. It also doesn’t mean that a younger swimmer cannot be moved up to a new group. The decision to move a swimmer up to a new group involves several other factors and is ultimately at the coaches’ discretion.
