Ariel Palacios Head Co-Coach

Ariel Palacios has been in competitive swimming since the age of 8.  She started off swimming for the Tinley Park Sharks age group team and then went on to swim for her high school team, Tinley Park Titans.  Upon graduating from high school, she signed with Robert Morris University Eagles and set multiple individual school records in the 1650 Freestyle, 1000 Freestyle, 500 Freestyle, and 200 Freestyle.  She also ranked top 15 finishers in the1650 Freestyle in the 2012 NAIA Nationals Championship.

Once Ariel completed her Associate’s Degree in Health Administration she started coaching for the Tinley Park Thunder age group team in the summer of 2013.  She spent two years as an assistant coach for the Thunder, and then took a Head Age Group coaching position under Shawn Walsh with the GILLS age group team out of Andrew High School in the fall of 2015.  With the GILLS team she started a Future Champs program that offered to teach competitive swimming to children ages 4-8.  She grew the program in two years from 0 swimmers to 20 graduates and 5 current swimmers. She also helped to build GILLS’ team from 46 swimmers in the summer of 2015 to well over 130 swimmers in the fall of 2016.

Ariel hopes to share her passion and knowledge about the sport of swimming with all of her athletes.  She continues to educate herself in the sport's growth and changes through varying online classes and in person seminars.  She plans on continuing the superb legacy that RASC swimming holds and looks forward to the many great seasons to come.

Cheryl OToole Head Co-Coach

Coach O'Toole began her swimming career in the Evergreen Park area and later swam at Evergreen Park High School where she was an IHSA State Qualifier.  She continued her swimming career at Eastern Illinois University.

Coach O'Toole began her coaching career at Brother Rice High School and was the head coach of the Rice Aquatic Foundation (RAF). In 2004 she joined the Richards Area Swim Club (RASC) where she is currently the Head Co-Coach .

Coach O'Toole is a proud member of USA Swimming and holds the following credentials: First Aid, CPR, Safety Training for Swim Coaches, and is an ASCA Level 1 Certified Coach.  

During her 20 years of coaching she has coached all levels of swimmers from novice to nationally ranked swimmers.  She has also produced many ISI State Champions over the years.


Bill Magnuson Assistant Coach

Coach Bill started his swim career at Thornridge High School.  There he competed in the butterfly and IM placing 2 nd and 3 rd in the IHSA state meet.  He then swam for Southern Illinois University for two years.  

He started his coaching career in Paducah, Ky coaching a summer team.  From there he was the men’s assistant coach at the University of Illinois from 1974-76.  He then was the head coach at Oak Forest High School from 1977-79.  Retiring from coaching he worked at the Chicago Board of Trade.  In 1995 he became an assistant coach at POSA age group.  He then became the head coach at POSA from 1996-1998.  In 1998 he became an assistant coach at GILLS until 2003.  He was the head Andrew High School coach.  

Coach Bill is also the father of Olympic Silver Medalist Christine Magnuson.

Joe Lewandowski Assistant Coach

Coach “Lew” has an expansive coaching career in Men’s & Women’s Swimming as well as Water Polo.  Coach Lew has been a Head Coach at Oak Lawn High School and Stagg High School.  He has spent the last seventeen years as the Men’s Head Water Polo Coach for Lockport High School, and he has also been the Assistant Coach at Mother McAuley, Brother Rice, and Lockport High Schools.  At Lockport his teams have placed as Conference Champions and Sectional Champions.  Coach Lew has also been awarded the Sectional Coach of the year two times so far during his career there.

Coach Lew has has been a Physical Education Teacher at Lockport High School for the past seventeen years and was the Brother Rice PE teacher for two years prior to that.  He holds a Masters Degree in High School Administration and a Bachelors Degree in Exercise Physiology from the University of Illinois at Chicago.

Coach Lew swam for the University of Illinois and was the MVP for College of DuPage Swim team.

Taren Gaylord Assistant Coach

Taryn begin swimming at the age of 8 at Richard’s Area Swim Club, and she continued swimming through high school here at Richards. 

Upon entering Eastern Illinois University she continued her competitive swimming career during all four years at college.


Taryn was the swimming coach for five years at Thornton Fractional South High School for both the boys and girls seasons.


Taryn continues to coach here at RASC right where she started her swimming career.

Matt Latham Assistant Coach

Matt started swimming with Mrs. O'Toole at RAF.  He excelled very quickly and went on to swim and play water polo at Brother Rice High School. 

He attended the illustrious Eastern Illinois Unversity, and swam all four years under the renowned Ray Padovan. 

He has coached at RASC for 5 years and currently coaches swimming at Brother Rice High School.
