SPY Families,

Here is a recap of some of things going on with SPY through December and a look ahead into things going on in January 2019.

What happened in December?

SPY Holiday Project Recap

The Matthew Project and the families affected were beyond grateful for the gifts they received from your generous donations and work during the SPY Holiday project this Christmas season. Last Saturday the Senior group also made tie blankets and pillows for additional participants of the program and those were delivered this week. We did exceed the goal for the project by around $500 and those additional funds are going to the Strong Kids Campaign in 2019 earmarked for The Matthew Project’s swim lessons over the summer. Thank you again for everyone’s donations and time to make a difference for some families in need this year!

Meet Recaps

SPY Participated in 4 Meets over the course of December.

Swimmers kicked off the month at Normal West in the BNSC Holiday Prelim/Final invite. SPY Finished 3rd overall at the meet (Boys in 2nd, Girls in 3rd) amongst other teams from Central Illinois and a large team from the Chicago Suburbs. It was a great meet where lots of 11 and over swimmers got a taste of Prelim/Final swimming. The drive Saturday morning could have been a lot easier though.

4 Swimmers attended the Winter Junior National Championships in Austin, Texas. The swimmers achieve 5 top 16 swims in Prelims with Kaitlynn nabbing 3, Matthew and Megan each having 1. The swimmers broke some team records at the meet as well. Matthew in the 500 Freestyle (4:30.50), Adam in the 200 IM (1:51.58), and Megan in the 400 IM (4:12.81).

On the weekend of December 15th and 16th swimmers competed at the BNY Holiday Sprint at Normal Community High School and a Dual meet vs. Champaign HEAT at Champaign Centennial High School. The meets provided some short and long racing opportunities for swimmers prior to the Holidays. Both meets were able to add some new events for swimmers at Districts and Y State.

New Championship meet Qualifiers added this month are below:

  • Y State: Ellison Garee

  • ISI Age Groups: Stella Evans and Lucas Sullens

Looking ahead to January

Snowball Invite

The Snowball Invite is 1 week away and we are getting ready to host over 600 swimmers in the facility next weekend. The following will be some reminders about things coming up for the meet. All meet documents are available on the website on the Snowball Invite Event Page.

  • Job Sign up – The Job Signup is still live on the website. I know many were traveling over the past few weeks. We have lots of spots left to fill so please log onto the website and sign up for any session in which you have a swimmer participating.

  • Pre-Order apparel is still available now through Primo Designs. Please follow this link and preorder by the end of the day on Sunday 1/6 to have your order included. Do not wait for Monday, because the online store will be closed on Monday morning.

  • We are hosting a YMCA officials Clinic as part of the Snowball Invite. There is a Level I YMCA officials clinic in the morning on Sunday from 7:30 AM to 11:30 AM. There is also a Level II YMCA officials clinic on Sunday Afternoon from 12:00 PM to 4:00 PM. While we added many officials last year with trainings, we additionally lost several due to family relocations and graduations. If you would be interested in becoming an official follow the link above, and if you are signed up for a Job at the meet that day we can find a way to replace you so you can participate in the clinic.

  • We will have a SPG Meeting regarding the Snowball Invite on Wednesday 1/9 at 6:30 PM in the Multipurpose Room of the Kerasotes Branch of the YMCA. We will go over much of the Snowball Invite information and responsibilities during that meeting. All families are encouraged to attend.

Other Miscellaneous Items

Photos and Slideshow for Banquet

If there is a parent who would be interested in volunteering to create the slideshow for the end of season banquet for the team this season please contact Rob and I. Additionally, keep taking photos at the upcoming meets and when we have a plan in place for the end of season slideshow we will share how you can share those photos so we can have as many swimmers represented in the slideshow as possible.

Circle City Invite 1/25-27

Families attending the Circle City Invite in 3 weeks should make sure they have their hotel rooms lined up if you have not already. We will be sending in updated times after the Snowball Invite for that meet.

FFSC Laura Manikas Memorial 2/2-3

Entries for the Laura Manikas Memorial swim meet in Bloomington were submitted this AM. If you would still like to get in the meet please contact Alex to do so. The meet isn’t always full, but we should treat it as such so the sooner you act the better chances of your swimmer participating in the meet.
