The History of Zionsville Swim Club

Our Mission

To inspire and encourage excellence through swimming.

Our History

The Zionsville Swim Club has been coaching, encouraging and watching young people learn and improve their swimming skills for the past 40 years. Today, the club has more than 300 members and offers competitive swimming for ages 8-18. The club is a member of USA Swimming which includes 3,000 swim clubs across the country and 100 in Indiana. In March, the 14 and under team finished fourth in the state competition, earning the highest placement in club history. In 2016, the Club earned its Silver Medal Club status in, USA Swimming, for the first time. This USA Swimming recognition identifies the Top 100 teams that execute strong, well-rounded programs to produce elite 18-and-under athletes.

The Zionsville Swim Club was founded in the fall of 1978 by John Crist and Bill Haggstrom. Crist was the head coach from the inception until 2001 and Bill Haggstrom was the first president. The purpose of the Club was twofold: to provide a feeder system to the Zionsville Community High School Swimming Team, and to provide an opportunity for school aged children of the community to participate in a year round lifetime activity.

On the Club's first season, the short course 1978-79 season, there were a number of swimmers that qualified for and placed in the State Age Group and State Senior Meet and by the early 1980's the club had over 125 registered swimmers. The first State Age Group Champion was Angie Saviano in the winter of 1981, winning the 50 and 100 yard butterfly. Between 2001-2004, ZSC had 5 different head coaches. In 2005 Darrick Thomas was named the new head coach and very quickly returned ZSC to State and National prominence. Eric Meyer has been the current head coach, since 2010.

The Zionsville Swim Team has a relaxed atmosphere, and it welcomes all skill levels. Eric has seen in a lot of other sports that not every athlete gets to participate, but in swimming everyone here does. They realize their own success relies on how much they want to practice and plus, they are in control of where they go and how far they want to take themselves. We cater to so many different needs and wants. We have national level competitors and others that just enjoy swimming. So come join us and see where swimming can take you.
