Our Plan for Return to Swim Practice

June 06, 2020

Boilermaker Aquatics,

We are eager to share with you the following plan for our return to swim practice. Although our routine will be modified in many ways to maximize safety of all our members and to minimize risk of spreading contagious viruses, we believe our competitive swimming environment is a beneficial one for our community.

In the last couple months, we have learned a lot about this virus as well as the recommendations of both local and national government agencies and groups to keep our entire population safe. With that information, we have consulted with many competitive swim clubs throughout the United States and especially Indiana to determine common practices and protocols for returning to the pool in the safest way possible. We do understand that our membership is diverse and each family has a unique situation regarding their daily lives and contact with other people. We want each family to return to our programming when they feel it is appropriate. If you choose not to return to swimming at this time, we support your decision and are open to learning more about your situation.

Our new season is a 2-month season starting on June 8th and concluding on August 8th. The purpose is to get back into swim training and begin preparations for the Short Course Season which traditionally begins in August. Indiana Swimming and USA Swimming are not currently sanctioning any competitions, so our focus can solely be on developing great movement and habits in the water. We will maintain a high level of patience through this entire season. Our coaches are in no hurry to get athletes racing or training at a high level. We simply aim to get our team back in the water to establish previous routines and refresh the fundamental skills in preparation for future swim seasons.

Thank you so much for your patience and support for the last few months. We are excited to see you again when the time is right!

Chad P. Dillon

**At this point, our organization is comfortable allowing Senior Black, Senior Gold, and Age Group Black into the water first in order to establish our new habits and behaviors at the pool. It is our aim to have the remaining part of the swim team get into the pool as soon as possible; this could mean that we have more groups active starting the week of June 15th**

Boilermaker Aquatics protocol for Social Distancing at Practice: (this description works in conjunction with our “Athlete Flow Tutorial” video that we've shared on our website).

  • Athlete Arrival at facility: All athletes must be dropped off at the main entrance of the facility no more than 10 minutes before the scheduled start time of practice. Then, walk right around the West side of the fence to get to Gate 1. Parents will not be allowed in the pool area at this time.

  • Entry to Facility: Gate 1 is designated for Entry only. From Gate 1, athletes walk to Rendezvous A or Rendezvous B (determined by practice time and stated on the practice schedule). Towel, clothes, and backpack can be placed in this area only, each athlete makes their own separate, small pile of belongings at their assigned location/cone. Sit and wait until coach announces that practice time begins. Then, athletes will move to dryland warm-up space.

  • Dryland Warm-up: The dryland warm-up area will have markers on the ground spaced apart so each athlete can stand on/near a marker and be more than 6 feet from other athletes. Warm-up routines will be programmed for the week, so everyday that athletes have practice will feature the same exact warm-up routine. The routines will feature many of the same movements that we've practiced in previous seasons, except we will modify the routines so athletes will not traverse, but rather, they will remain stationary. At the completion of the dryland warm-up routine, athletes must remain at their marked location until coach cues movement to the swimming lanes. The training group in the pool will exit fully prior to the next group approaching the pool.

  • In the pool: Each 25 yard lane will allow 4 athletes to swim. We will begin each group's practice session with 2 athletes at each end of each lane. Then, one athlete from each end will move 10 yards out into the pool on the right side of their lane, and one athlete will stay at the wall. At this point, our group and pool will resemble the graphic below. Our Coach will cue the beginning of an activity, and on command, all 4 athletes in each lane will begin the activity in the traditional counter-clockwise movement pattern.

  • Exiting the pool: Athletes in the water will exit the pool at the end of the pool at which they entered. They can return to their personal belongings, wrap up in their towel or clothing, and exit the pool deck area through Gate 2 (adjacent to parking lot). We need parents to be waiting in the parking lot at the end of practice so that there is no athlete lingering around or socializing in the parking lot.

Social distancing recommendations for our entire membership based on CDC Guidelines:

  • Maintain 6 feet distance from all persons

  • Wash hands often

  • Avoid close contact with people who are sick

  • Cover coughs and sneezes

  • Clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces

  • Monitor your health

Our coaching staff and lifeguards will be leaders in modeling these behaviors. Since our practice environment is outdoors and we will distance ourselves from anyone else in the environment, we will not mandate that coaches wear a face mask during practices. We will ensure that each of our coaches possess a face mask during practice in case they need to come in close contact with another member for the purpose of safety/health. As we move indoors to different facilities, face masks may become part of our new protocol.

Boilermaker Aquatics SELF-ADMINSTERED HEALTH SCREEN

Please answer the following Health Screen questions each day before you come to a Boilermaker Aquatics Practice Session. The most concerning threat to an organized sports team is rapid spread within the group. Effective containment depends on early symptom identification, removal from practice (isolation), and strict guidelines regarding return to practice. This form is for personal or family use and you do not need to bring it to practice.

If you had any of the following symptoms in the past 24 hours, please remain at home and do not return to practice until you are symptom free for 72 hours. If practical, go to a testing facility to be assessed.

  • Unexplained rash

  • Diarrhea

  • Vomiting

  • Cough

  • Shortness of breath/difficulty breathing

  • Fever

  • Chills

  • Muscle pain or body aches

  • Sore throat

  • New loss of taste or smell

Have you tested positive for COVID-19 or otherwise been diagnosed with COVID-19 within the last 14 days? If you answer yes, all three of the following are required before return to practice: a minimum of 14 days of self-quarantine from the positive test, 72 hours with no symptoms, and a subsequent negative test. Testing and results must be reported to the coaching staff to monitor contacts and early signs of transmission within the team or groups.

Have you have had close contact within the last 14-days with someone who has COVID-19 or who has any of the above symptoms? (Note: Close contact is defined as within 6 feet for more than 10 minutes per CDC Guidelines.) If you answer yes, to return to practice the swimmer should have no symptoms for 72 hours, a negative test, and no additional close contact with the infected individual.

ADDITIONAL SAFETY EXPECTATIONS

  • All athletes must return signed copy of the attached waiver to be permitted to attend practice.

  • Athletes will only be permitted to enter the practice environment 10 minutes before their scheduled practice. If they arrive early, they must wait in their car until the appropriate time to enter the building.

  • Athletes must leave the practice location immediately at the completion of any practice. There should be no socializing in the parking lot before or after any practice.

  • Parents/spectators will not be allowed in the practice environment at any time and are expected to practice social distancing when waiting for their swimmer. We understand this may bring Safe Sport concerns. We will have 2-4 coaches, 3 lifeguards, and other staff on site. At all times, we will be well beyond “two deep leadership” and well within the requirements of Safe Sport.

  • Athletes must view our “Athlete Flow Tutorial” which demonstrates proper traffic flow to, at, and leaving the Vinton Pool Facility.

  • All gates/doors to the facility will be propped open to limit athletes from touching any surfaces.

  • Athletes should be prepared to arrive and depart in their suits. We ask that athletes use the restroom at home prior to departure for practice in order to minimize use of the restrooms at Vinton.

  • Restroom breaks will be limited to one person at a time in the case that athletes need. Please follow each facility’s guideline on restroom use. Locker rooms should not be used for changing and deck changing is strictly prohibited.

  • There will be a plan for athletes to leave their personal belongings in an assigned space to ensure social distancing on the deck (either Rendezvous 1 or Rendezvous 2). We ask that you only bring what is necessary for practice and limit the items that come into the facility. Once athletes enter the building, they will go immediately to their assigned spot and await instructions from their coach.

  • Athletes need to bring the following training equipment: swim cap, goggles, and swim suit. At this time, all other training equipment should remain at home.

  • Athletes should bring their own water bottles (already filled). Use of the water fountains at the facility will be prohibited.

  • Athletes will swim with a maximum of four (4) athletes per lane, starting from opposite ends of the pool (please see the diagram above).

  • For us all to stay healthy and be able to keep swimming, we ask our athletes to please practice responsible social distancing when they are away from the pool as well.

  • Athletes and families who travel by air, or to an area deemed high risk by the staff, will need to self-isolate for 14 days before returning to practice. We are expecting clear communication and full transparency from families on this.

  • Vinton Pool staff will be disinfecting the bathrooms throughout the day on a 20-30 minute basis, and we will provide disinfecting wipes inside the restrooms as well.

ASSUMPTION OF RISK - COVID-19

NOTICE: This is a legally binding document. Please read it in its entirety before completing and signing. Members may not participate in any BA-sponsored activities where there is contact with other non-family members without first completing and submitting this form.

COVID-19 WARNING

The Novel Coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) is an extremely contagious virus that spreads easily person to person. COVID-19 infections have been confirmed throughout the United States, including Indiana. Federal and state authorities recommend social distancing as well as wearing face coverings as a means to prevent the spread of the virus. COVID-19 can lead to severe illness, personal injury, permanent disability, and death. Participating in Boilermaker Aquatics (BA) sponsored programs and activities (e.g., swimming practice/lessons, dryland activities, other BA functions) could increase the risk of contracting COVID-19.

Boilermaker Aquatics is implementing as many precautions as possible to prevent the spread of Covid-19 during BA sponsored activities. Despite these precautions, BA in no way warrants or guarantees that BA members and their families will not be exposed to or contract COVID-19 through participation in BA programs and activities. Thus, BA strongly discourages swimmers who are at high risk or who have parents/guardians who are at high risk for severe illness from attending practice and participating in BA sponsored activities.

For more information about who is at high risk for severe illnesses and how to prevent contracting and/or spreading COVID-19, please go to:

https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/need-extra-precautions/index.html.

AGREEMENT

By completing and signing this agreement, I acknowledge the contagious nature of COVID-19 and voluntarily assume the risk that I, my children and/or my family may be exposed to and infected with COVID-19 while participating in BA sponsored activities and that such exposure or infection may result in illness, personal injury, permanent disability, and/or death. I also understand that the risk of becoming exposed to or infected by COVID-19 may result from the actions, omissions, or negligence of myself and others, including, but not limited to, BA’s employees, volunteers, and program participants and their families.

I voluntarily agree to assume all of the foregoing risks and accept sole responsibility for any injury resulting from exposure to COVID-19 (including, but not limited to, personal injury, disability, and/or death) to myself, my children and my family. I understand that any time a swimmer or parent feels like the risk is too great to the swimmer or swimmer’s family, the swimmer and/or parent may decide to leave or not attend the BA sponsored activity.

Assumption of Risk for Minor Children - COVID-19

I hereby release, covenant not to sue, discharge, and hold harmless BA and its employees, agents, and representatives, of and from any claims arising out of the, my children and/or my family’s exposure to COVID-19, including all liabilities, claims, actions, damages, costs or expenses of any kind arising out of or relating thereto. I understand and agree that this release includes any claims based on the actions, omissions, or negligence of BA and its employees, agents, and representatives, whether a COVID-19 infection occurs before, during, or after participation in BA sponsored activities.
