The Greenwood Gators offer training groups for swimmers of all ages and ability levels. It is the goal of the Greenwood Gators to offer training for all of our athletes that is geared towards challenging each individual and developing each individual to the best of THEIR abilities. 

The Gators are utilizing a progression that helps to define the skills the kids need at each level. Swimmer progressions are an art, with many factors that impact the decision. Swimmers must be able to swim in an organized and predictable pattern for safety and for all swimmers in the group to progress and train together.  Key factors that coaches will look at in determining the appropriate training for your child are physical ability, emotional maturity, age/cognitive level, and drive.  A swimmer must be able to perform the highlighted skills for consideration of entry into the designated group:  
 

Gator Training Groups

Developmental Group

Developmental Black

This is our secondary level to competitive swimming. Swimmers should have knowledge of all four competitive strokes. Focus in this group is on fundamentals and technique. A structured dryland program consisting of calisthenics will be introduced.

Progression

  • 80-90% technique/10-20% train
  • Typical Practice ranges 1 hour to 1 hour and 15 minutes
  • 5 Practices a week are offered (we recommend 3 times a week attendance to see sustained development)
  • Generally, first time swimmers ages 9 to 12 years of age,
  • Legal Free and Back
  • Able to demonstrate at least a Diving well 25 of legal Butterfly or Breaststroke
  • Understands touch turns and underwaters
  • Can perform standing shallow dive
  • Can swim continuous 100 free and 100 back
  • Understands lane etiquette
  • Extrinsic motivation

 

 Junior Group

Junior Black

Our Junior Black group is for those swimmers who are making a more serious commitment to swimming. While technique will continue to be stressed, it will be done within the structure of increased training.  Swimmers learn interval training and self-managing practice sets.

Progression

  • 50-60% technique/40-50% train
  • Generally, practices 1 hour 30 minutes to 1 hour 45 minutes
  • 5 practices/week
  • 4 30 – 45-minute Dry Land sessions per week, 2 of which will be Yoga.
  • Generally, 11-13 (9 and 10-year olds that have attained State Meet qualifying times may be considered for coach approval)
  • Efficient and Four Legal strokes
  • Effective turns
  • Understands interval training
  • Can maintain training intensity without stroke deterioration (endurance set, speed set)
  • Knowledge of all Freestyle times as well as Major Stroke times (50 and 100)
  • Intrinsic motivation

 

 

Senior Group

Senior Black

This group is our highest performing training groups. This is for swimmers, 14 and Up whom participated in the LCM or SCY state meet or 13-year-old zone qualifiers.  These are the swimmers that have competed at the highest level and wish to attain Sectional and National level swimming standards. Swimmers in this group will work on race strategies, more efficient strokes and increased conditioning.  They will also focus on visualizations and mental strategies, goal setting, and preparation for their future swim career.

Progression

  • Technique through training
  • Water practices lasting in duration from 1hour 45 min to 2 hours 15 min
  • 4 Dry Land sessions per week ranging from 45 minutes to 1 hour 15 minutes focusing on body manipulation as well Load Bearing activities in the weight room.
  • Regularly attends 6 practices a week (8-9 during the summer)
  • Generally, 14+ (advanced younger swimmers (13) meeting meet standards and with coach approval)
  • Can generally train at long durations at higher intensity of all 4 strokes as well as IM sets.
  • Knowledge of all Freestyle times and Major stroke events and can break down required pacing goals
  • Consistently achieves championship cuts
  • Highly motivated
