14 CIA Swimmers Compete at 2020 Iowa High School Boys State Swimming Meet

The 2020 Iowa High School Boys State Swimming Meet was held on Saturday, February 15, at the University of Iowa’s Campus Recreation & Wellness Center and 14 CIA swimmers competed representing five schools.

Swimming for Ankeny, Trent Frandson successfully defended his state titles from 2019 in both the 200 Free and 500 Free. The junior broke the state record in the 200 Freestyle, which dated back to 1985, with a time of 1:35.68. His winning time in the 500 Freestyle was 4:26.27. Frandson was also part of the Hawks’ 2nd place 200 Freestyle relay and 4th place 400 Freestyle relay where he had a lead off split of 43.93 seconds. His 200 Free, 500 Free, and 200 Free relay were each automatic All-America times while the 400 Free relay is an All-America consideration.

Drew Reiter won the 100 Butterfly with an All-America consideration time of 48.93 seconds. Swimming for Waukee, he was also 2nd in the 200 Individual Medley with an automatic All-America time of 1:48.29. The sophomore was part of the Warriors’ 200 Medley and 400 Freestyle relays that both placed 3rd with All-America consideration times.

Waukee senior, Cameron Linder placed 3rd in the 200 IM with an All-America consideration time of 1:50.47 and 2nd in the 500 Freestyle with another AA consideration time of 4:30.87. He was also on the 200 Medley Relay and 400 Free Relay that both earned AA consideration times while placing 3rd.

AJ Abram placed 3rd in the 200 Freestyle and 4th in the 100 Freestyle. The Waukee freshman was also on the 3rd place 400 Free Relay (AA cons) and 8th place 200 Free Relay.

Ankeny’s Brek Stukerjurgen was 4th in the 100 Backstroke and 6th in the 500 Freestyle. The junior was also part of the 3rd place 400 Free Relay (AA cons) and 5th place 200 Medley Relay.

Valley junior Cael Elmore placed 10th in the 200 Free and 8th in the 500 Free. He was also part of the 9th place 400 Free Relay.

Swimming for Waukee, freshman Sam Davey was 11th in the 200 Individual Medley and 11th in the 100 Backstroke.

Valley’s freshman, Reed Wallace placed 9th in the 500 Free and 19th in the 200 Free. He was on the 9th place 400 Free Relay team.

Johnston’s Ryan Overton was 9th in the 100 Backstroke and 24thin the 100 Free. The sophomore was part of the Dragons’ 400 Free Relay.

Waukee freshman, James Coffey finished 11th in the 500 Free.

Spencer Olson (Johnston junior) placed 20th in the 100 Breaststroke.

Allen Li swam the 200 Individual Medley and 100 Breaststroke where he finished 22nd and 23rd, respectively. The Valley junior was also on the 200 Medley (8th) and 200 Free (12th) relay teams.

Dowling Catholic freshman, Gage Brinker finished 21st in the 500 Freestyle.

Johnston’s senior Cole Phillips placed 23rd in the 100 Backstroke and 24th in the 200 Freestyle.

The 2020 Iowa High School Boys State Swimming Meet will definitely be remembered as a fast state meet as six of the 11 events had new state records set.

The Iowa High School Athletic Association released its 2020 All-State Awards and some CIA swimmers were recognized.
