The University Hills Narwhal Team is a summer swim team that is part of the Irvine Swim League. The team is open to all University Hills children age 5-18 as of June 1 of each year. Every year from the beginning of June to mid-August, practice sessions are offered at the Coltrane Pool between 3:30 pm and 6:30 pm, with each age group assigned to a 60-minute time slot (15 minutes of stretching and 45 minutes of swimming), with swim meets held on Saturday mornings.

The Irvine Swim League (ISL) is a developmental summer swim league for youth who live in Irvine. The league emphasizes water safety, stroke instruction, and individual improvement.  It must be noted that the ISL is not a "learn to swim" program.  The vision of the ISL is to introduce the sport of swimming to youngsters who live in Irvine. That said, to participate on our ISL team, swimmers must be "Water Safe".

Our Goal

To instill a life-long love of swimming and to build a program of excellence in training, team unity, character development, and family support where every swimmer has the opportunity to achieve their potential and compete at the highest level.

Our Mission

To promote sportsmanship and to promote improved relationships between swimmers, parents and neighbors.

To provide excellence in professional coaching and programs to develop individuals to the best of their abilities through summer recreational swimming.

To provide an atmosphere that inspires swimmers to achieve their maximum potential through a strong work ethic, discipline, self-motivation and self-esteem

To develop team unity where everyone encourages and takes pride in each other at all levels of competition.

To instill a life-long love of swimming, through enjoyment and accomplishment at all levels of swimming.

What to Expect

During the first week of practice, ISL coaches watch swimmers to evaluate whether the swimmer is indeed "water safe" and if the swimmer is ready to be on an ISL team. The Narwhals Swim Team as well as the other ISL teams reserve the right to remove swimmers from the team if they are not water safe, as this could pose a hazard to the swimmer or to other swimmers.

Practices are offered Monday-Friday. On these days, coaches  provide both group and individual instruction on the various swim strokes, preparing Narwhals swimmers for swim meets against other ISL swim teams.

Our team includes swimmers from age 5 to 18. Swim meet events for each age group are as follows:

Swimmers ages 5-6 and 7-8 years of age participate in 25-yard races (1 length of the pool) These swimmers may compete in freestyle, backstroke, butterfly, and breaststroke events and may also participate in relays.  Swimmers may not compete in more than three individual events and in one relay event (total of four 4 events) per meet.

Swimmers ages 9-10, 11-12, 13-14, and 15-18 participate in 50-yard freestyle, backstroke, butterfly, and breaststroke events in ISL meets, as well as the 100-yard individual medley event and may also be selected to participate in relays.   Swimmers may not compete in more than three three individual events and in one relay event (total of four 4 events) per meet.
