Bluefins

Group Expectations

The Bluefins practice group is the age group high-performance group for athletes aged 12-14. In this group, athletes will set a high standard for personal and team success, team accountability, and contribute to a process-focused, supportive group culture. Expect to compete each day in practice and to elevate those around you.

This group offers a challenging schedule with the most practice opportunities of any age group level. Additionally, a high level of investment is required to be successful and happy in this group. Athletes who are not prepared to meet the standards listed below should remain in the Sea Dogs practice group until ready. Bluefins is designed to prepare age group athletes for the Royal 2 and Royal 3 groups at the Senior level of our program, while getting athletes ready to perform at a high level at Age Group State, Zones, and Sectionals.

Group Standards

For athletes to be prepared for Bluefins, they must be able to perform the following abilities and achievements:

  • Well over the required 70% attendance in the Sea Dogs practice group, or met 80% expectation last season in Bluefins
  • Ready and eager to race all 13-14 IMX events (200's of stroke, 200 IM, 400 IM, distance free)
  • Has achieved or is working towards an IMX score above 1500 in their current age group
  • Approval from both Sea Dogs and Bluefin group lead coaches and head age group coach

For the fall of 2022 season, any athlete who was previously assigned to Bluefins should plan to remain in the group, unless they do not feel they can meet the standards of the group outlined on this page and in the links below, in which case they should contact me at [email protected] to schedule a meeting and discuss the best fit for their level of development.

Required Equipment

Click the link above to view required gear for the Bluefins group. All equipment is available at Elsmore Swim Shop.

Please be prepared with clothing for dryland (t-shirt, shorts, athletic shoes) each day, even when dryland is not listed on the schedule. Crocs, flip flops, slides, etc. are not acceptable for dryland.

Always bring a water bottle. It is recommended that each athlete also has a backup suit, goggles, and swim cap. Team caps are available at the pool for $10 (charged to your account - no cash necessary).

Meet Signup

Meets and events can be registered for under the Meets page. Please do not sign up for any events, you may put requests in the Notes section. Coaches will be developing event lineups with athletes at practice.

Communication

Parents in the Bluefins practice group will receive a weekly newsletter on Sunday afternoon or evening with the weekly schedule, any relevant announcements for the week, and action items like meet signup deadlines or volunteer needs.

All parents should also join the Bluefins GroupMe by clicking here. This communication channel works best if you download the app. This will be the most immediate way to get information about practice time changes or cancellations (for example, due to inclement weather).
