High School Lettering Criteria

As a new swim season gets underway, we want to ensure that our swimmers are fully aware of the DODEA requirements to achieve a Varsity Letter in swimming. These requirements are stated in the memorandum of understanding between DODDS-E.

At a minimum, each swimmer must make 75% of practices, 70% of meets, and either qualify for Long Distance or Individual Champs OR earn 60 points according to the following table. These points are not the same points that are used to score meets. If you are swimming with the KF for the entire season and not participating in another DoDDS Fall or Winter sport, then you must swim in a minimum of 7 meets (excluding Long Distance or Individual Champs) to achieve the 70% meet participation requirement.

If you are participating in another DODDS varsity sport during either the Fall or Winter sport seasons, please ensure the KF are aware that you are a dual sport athlete and know when you are swimming full-time with the KF. While you are in-season with your non-KF team, you are exempt from the above attendance requirements; you are welcome to attend meets and practices as you are able but your attendance is not compulsory. If you swim in a meet while you are in-season with your other sport, you can earn qualifying times and break records but you will be swimming ONLY in an exhibition status, and thus not able to score points.

Dual sport athletes must achieve the same lettering requirements during the sport season that they are swimming with the KF except the number of available meets is smaller. If you are swimming with the KF in the fall season, you must swim in at least 3 meets (Aug 31-Nov 3) to make the 70% minimum. If you are swimming with the KF during the winter season, you must swim in at least 3 meets (Nov 9-Feb 2) to make the 70% minimum. Please note that in order to attend EFSL champs you must swim in at least 4 meets.

In regards to attendance for high school lettering purposes, attendance to all applicable Kingfish practices (swim, dry land, and weight lifting) will hold the same standards as that of the DoDEA school system. Excused absences include illness, medical appointments, emergency leave, school sponsored trips, dual sport athletic practices or events, Kingfish sponsored events and meets, and absence due to inclement weather conditions. Unexcused absences include family vacations and absences for reasons that are known by the student’s parent/sponsor, but which fall outside the reasons that constitute an excused absence (e.g., oversleeping, attending nonschool-sponsored events, etc.). PLEASE notify the head coach about any absences from practice at kingfishheadcoach@gmail.com as soon as possible.

Please Note: These stipulations apply only to time frames when athletes are in school (for example, we will not consider an absence unexcused if your family takes leave during Dec. break or over long weekends where school is not in session). Please note that although practice is not 'required' for attendance during Dec. break, this is a critical time for the swimmers to rebuild endurance for SD Champs, so it is highly encouraged that they attend as many practices as possible.

We hope you have an enjoyable and successful swim season that culminates in a varsity letter. Please reference the team handbook or bylaws or contact a board member for additional questions.
