Girls' State Kudos

Neil Romney

Girls’ KYLSC State, March 12-14, Kudos

RACE had 9 participants and A and B open relays in both the 4 fr and 4 med.

Everyone had at least one individual PR and one relay PR. Several of the participants were swimming in their first State meet. We set 9 individual team records, 3 relay team records (see below), and had two high-point top-three finishers. We swam to 59% prelim PRs, 75% final PRs, and 75% relay PRs. There were 12 “big swims,” races in which swimmers dropped 1.0 seconds/50 or more over the course of the day. Many 2022 State cuts were made or re-made, one Futures cut was made, and one new Minute-Clubber was inducted.

  • Hannah Andrews, swimming in her first State meet, dropped 18 in the mile (20.07.50). Next is the 20-minute barrier.
  • Maddi Barbee, also swimming in her first State meet, finalled in the 2 ba (2.10.47) and dropped 7 in the mile (19.08.51).
  • Madison Bush established team records in the 10 (10.48.93) and 16.5 (17.55.71), earning 3rd and 6th respectively, and also scored in the 5 fr (5.16.16).
  • Hannah Gardner finalled in both the 1 (67.94) and 2 (2.30.22), setting a TR in the latter. She also joined the Minute Club, leading off the 4 fr relay in 59.33, earning the RACE RelayBig Award for that swim as well as her breaststroke-leg PRs in the team-record-setting 2 (31.8) and 4 (68.2) medleys.
  • Amelia Matzke finalled in the 1 fl, finishing 12th with a 61.94 for a 2.8-second drop.
  • Sarah McGuinness finalled in the 1 fl with a 62.76 for 15th and earned the RACE Gargantuan Swim award in the 2 ba, dropping 14.7 seconds to 2.21.29.
  • Madeline Osmun finalled in the 50 fr finishing 11th (24.42) and dropped a second in her 2 fr (2.02.61)

Ella Cundiff and Sarah Zoellner earned Swimmer(s) of the Meet for their outstanding performances (this is the first time I can recall having co-Swimmer of the Meet awards, but these two demonstrated focused, aggressive racing from start to finish and were exceptional enough in their particulars to merit this unprecedented honor).
