COSST GROUP DESCRIPTIONS
 

The City of Shreveport Swim Team is a year round competitive swim team offering high quality professional coaching and technique instruction to swimmers of all levels. Our goal is to develop each individual to the best of THEIR abilities.

Success in the sport of swimming is measured differently for each swimmer. While one athlete may see progress quickly, others may see slower progress over a longer period of time. This is normal and has more to do with the physical and emotional maturity of each swimmer. Therefore, swimmers may progress through each level at their own pace. New swimmers will meet for an evaluation with one of the coaches in order to determine placement.

 



Junior Varsity Group 1

Group 1 is designed for swimmers as early as age 5 who can swim 25 yards of freestyle and backstroke with proper form. These swimmers are well balanced in the water and are able to perform basic drills with the correct breathing technique for each stroke. This group focuses on strengthening the freestyle and backstroke but also introduces learning the breaststroke and butterfly, flip turns, and racing starts. Swimmers are encouraged to practice a minimum of 2 days per week and participate in swim meets.

Junior Varsity Group 2

Group 2 is for swimmers who have a working knowledge of all four competitive strokes. These swimmers train to perfect each stroke while learning new drills to enhance their swimming ability. They are introduced to interval training to build endurance while continuing to work on starts, turns, and stroke mechanics. Swimmers are encouraged to practice 3 days per week and participate in swim meets.

Junior Varsity Group 3

Swimmers in Group 3 train to become stronger and further proficient in all four strokes. These swimmers are introduced to test sets and a variety of racing skills. Most of the practice time is used towards conditioning athletes in preperation of the high demands of the Varsity program. Swimmers are encouraged to practice 4 days per week and participate in swim meets.

Varsity

The Varisty practice group is comprised of our fastest, most experienced athletes with extensive competitive swim experience to fine tune stroke mechanics and increase their endurance, speed, and strength in the water. These swimmers are ready to commit to high intensity workouts with a minimum of 10 hours of practice per week. These practices will be enhanced with morning and weekend practice sessions. Training includes challenging interval and stroke specific workouts, varying distances, establishment of a positive mentality, and execution of proper racing strategy. Swimmers are expected to attend 90% of practices. Participation in meets and end of season championships is required.
