The City of Shreveport Swim Team is a year round competitive swim program that provides a positive training atmosphere in order to prepare athletes both physically and mentally to compete to the best of their potential. It is our goal to send swimmers to the highest possible level of competition during the USA swim season. Swimmers are expected to make a full commitment to bettering themselves as athletes by participating in dry land exercises and pool workouts, by fine tuning stroke mechanics, and by setting personal and team goals. Through this endeavor, we hope to enhance the development of the athlete's character through sportsmanship, commitment, responsibility, and integrity. In the process of striving for success, by always being the best that we can be, we are preparing our team to be ranked among the top three USA Swimming teams in the state of Louisiana.

COSST has produced many nationally ranked athletes over the years including several Junior National Champions, Senior National Finalists, National Age Group Champions, and Olympic Trial Qualifiers. Among them was a young man named Damon McCoy whom many coaches consider as the best swimmer to ever come from the state of Louisiana. His extraordinary talent was evident shortly after joining COSST in 1975. He quickly rose to the national level setting several Age Group records and later qualifying for the Olympics. Damon was tragically taken before his prime after a brief, gallant battle with bone cancer. His spirit lives on at COSST and each year we proudly host the Damon McCoy Invitational in memory and honor of our city's most accomplished swimmer. The meet now hosts more than 400 swimmers from the Southern Region. More about Damon McCoy can be found here; The Damon McCoy Story.

The history of Shreveport's first year-round competitive swim team can be traced back to 1949 when Jack Jordan, regarded as the founding father of competitive swimming in Shreveport -- if not Louisiana -- organized the Shreveport Swim Club and held their first practices at the Municipal Pool.

  • 1949 - Jack Jordan organized the Shreveport Swim Club and held the first practices at the Municipal Pool.
  • 1964 - Jack Jordan opens Southside Swim Club and founds his new team, the Southside Flying Fish.
  • 1974 - The indoor 25-yard pool opens at Southside Swim Club. Several teams merge with the Southside Flying Fish to form the City of Shreveport Swim Team. COSST receives its USA Swimming charter.
  • 1975 - Butch Jordan, 4-year letterman in swimming and conference record holder at Southern Arkansas University, joins his father as coach of COSST.
  • 1978 - The outdoor 50-meter pool is constructed.
  • 1988 - The Shreveport Invitational is renamed the Damon McCoy Invitational, drawing hundreds of swimmers from the Southern Region to Shreveport each summer.
