John Tiernan GLSS Head Coach

JT has been coaching swimming for 11 years, both as a USA Swimming Club Coach and currently as the Head Swimming and Diving Coach for St. Joseph's Academy in Cleveland.  He brings an enormous amount of energy and excitement to the pool deck.  JT's devotion to his swimmers is evident in his swimmers continued success and passion for the sport of swimming.

Betsy Tietjen Gills Coach

Betsy (Bare) Tietjen: Coach Betsy started swimming at 3 years old, and has been coaching since 2001.  She attended Hawken upper school and swam with Jerry Holtrey.  Betsy has been coaching the Mayfield Middle school team since 2012 (minus one year at Hawken middle school).  She has also been an assistant coach at Hawken Upper, has coached various age/ability groups at LESD 2001-19, and came to GLSS in June.  She is working with Junior Sailfish and will help with the other groups as needed!  I love working with the young swimmers and teaching them about the ins and outs of the sport.  Fundamentally, coaching swimming is about making kids excited about the sport, by keeping it fun as well as giving them the tools to master the basics.

Betsy also teaches ELA and Social Studies to 6th grade boys at the Hebrew Academy, is working toward an MEd, and is a travel agent for Mouse Made Simple.  When Betsy is not working, she lives in Mayfield Hts. with her 14 year old daughter, Mareike, 12 year old son, Conor, 6 year old son, Freddie and 23 year old step-daughter, Samantha, and husband Kurt.  She loves Disney and Universal and reads a lot of history books!  She is active at her church, and loves working out, travelling, playing volleyball, camping, hiking and kayaking!

Hannah Newcomb Gills

Hannah loves working with young swimmers and teaching them to gain confidence in the water while also learning to enjoy the sport of swimming. She comes from a background in clinical psychology and working with middle school, high school, and college students for success in the long term.

Hueston Holder Tails/Fins Coach

Hueston grew up in the pool, now swimming for over two decades of his life. He went from living in Iowa to swimming for the frequently nationally ranked swim team at Ashland University where he became a multi All-American swimmer. Although he’s a sprint freestyler at heart, he loves teaching every stroke. When he’s not on the pool deck and not in the water he’s probably with his wife, maybe walking his two dogs, or possibly even playing card games with his grandma. In the end, he hopes to teach the swimmers more than just how to move fast through the water.
