Shaker Sharks News | February 2020

Jen and Tony Kuhel

From Head Coach Eric Peterson

Welcome and welcome back to many of our newest members and to those who are returning from a break or the middle school swim season.  Great to have you with us!

Winter weather is here. Reminder: if the Shaker Heights City Schools are closed, we will not be able to offer practice for any group on that day.

This is a very exciting time of year. After months of training and hard work, many swimmers are feeling more confident in their abilities. We want to build on that confidence. However, the swim meet schedule may be limited for many of our newer members. February and March are transition and championship months for the swimming calendar year. We have some upcoming events in March that we hope will help highlight improvements and continue to build team spirit. More details will be forthcoming.

Swim Meets. To those who are attending swim meets at this time of year, we need to do a better job of being on time for warm-ups. We have started to establish a reputation as a team, of being late and missing events. That is not acceptable and needs to be corrected. I understand many of the challenges that can arise from early morning departures, to directions, parking, and multiple schedules within a family. However, the information regarding meets is available in advance and we need to do a better job of planning accordingly. Thank you for prompt attention to improving this situation.

Championship meet swimmers have championship t-shirts that will be issued.  Make sure you indicate correct sizing for your swimmer’s t-shirt and please have your swimmer wear that shirt on deck for the meet.

Reminder: we have to share the facilities with many different sports and activities at both pools.  We need to be respectful of those individuals. There will be several upcoming events at the middle school pool, that will cause our program to adjust this month.  Please be respectful and understanding. At the same time, if a swimmer feels that there is activity going on in the locker room or adjacent hallway that is a concern, they need to come inform a SHSH coach ASAP, preferably before leaving the building.  The SHSH staff will communicate with building security and the supervisor/coach for that activity to minimize the repeat occurrence and/or resolve the situation promptly.

Check the practice calendar online for the most up-to-date information regarding practice schedules. We have numerous groups and two sites for practices.

Please note the following key dates:

Junior & Gold Sharks

Practice Cancelled on February 17: Jr. and Gold Practices are cancelled for Monday, February 17 for the Shaker Heights City Schools observance of President’s Day.

Congrats: Congratulations to all those who swam at the TYR Turn Up the Heat meet, a lot of excellent swims and personal best times! Way to go Sharks!!

Practice Notes: For the past few weeks, Junior and Gold practice groups have been continuing to focus on their pulling efficiency in each stroke. Gold swimmers have focused on maintaining a consistent stroke rate over longer distances and strengthening their upper body by pulling with various equipment. Junior swimmers have focused on ways to stretch their arms out in all strokes to catch and pull more water as they swim. Both groups have also worked on interval training to help improve technique as well as increase their aerobic capacity. We will continue building on these lessons and apply those new ways over the next few practices.

Event Reminders: Below, we have included a list of recommended meets that have warm-up information. This list does not include information regarding Regional Championships (2/23/20), as the meet hosts are still in the process of finalizing certain details. Any Jr./Gold swimmers that have competed in any meet this season will be recommended to attend the Regional Championships.

The 8 & Under Championships will be held at Cleveland State University on Sunday, February 16. On the day of the meet, all swimmers must arrive no later than 7:45 a.m. for warm-ups. **ALL swimmers aged 8 and younger will be recommended to attend the 8 & Under Championships

Winter Time Trials: The Shaker Sharks Winter Time Trial will be held at our Shaker Heights Middle School Pool on Tuesday February 18. The time trial will begin at our juniors practice time, 5:30 p.m., and will be open for all groups from juniors through our age group swimmers. The event will be posted by the end of this week or early next week so keep an eye out for that information. Lastly, we will need parent volunteers for timing purposes so if you are interested please reply to this email or see one of the coaches at practice.

Please check out our bulletin board and newsletter for more updates, and as always, if you have any questions or concerns, or if you feel like this email contains incorrect information, please reply to this email or speak to us before or after practice. We thank you for your support of this program and the support of your swimmer(s).

Senior Sharks

High School season is winding down.We look forward to your success in the championship season.  We would really like to see a great turnout for the LESI Senior Championship meet March 6-8.  After March 8, many of you will have the option to take a well-deserved break from practices. We will offer technique sessions during that period. Swimmers must sign up in advance for those sessions on the team website. We will start training for the summer long course season beginning Monday, April 6.

Starting in March, we will be adjusting the practice set up for the Masters group. We will be offering 3-4 lanes of workout. However, we will also be offering 2-3 lanes of technique work each practice. Those interested in improving a particular aspect of their technique will have that opportunity at both pools. More details regarding this will be explained in the coming weeks at practice.

Please remember to always check the online practice calendar for the most up to date practice information.

We run a very flexible practice schedule. If you come late or leave early, that is fine, just do so in a courteous manner.

If you arrive for practice late, just hop in and join the set in progress. You can ask a coach, if available or lane mates or just swim easy until the next set starts and you’ll get the full explanation.

If you leave before the practice is over, just let your lane mates know you are leaving. Best to try and leave at the end of a set, not mid-set.

Thank you and keep up the great work. Lots of improvements going on with our group. Team breakfast day will be Saturday, February 29  with lanes 5 & 6 being asked to help us out.
