MAKO Swimming

MAKO Swimming is the parent organization of two local swim clubs in Sussex County Delaware.  Started in 2016 by Matt and Lisa Morgan of Harbeson, DE, then with just 15 swimmers, our team now consists of two sub divisions. Mako Swim Club is our year-round USA team and the Sussex Community Swim Team (SCST) Makos which are our seasonal community team.

Our teams compete side by side for all summer and winter local league meets, while our Mako Swim Club swimmers also attend USA sanctioned meets throughout the year across the region. SCST will have shorter seasons and will only be swimming local DSA and Two Bays League meets. The Mako Swim Club will be practicing year round at a more intense level and will be competing in not only local DSA meets but also USA meets.  These swimmers will be expected to put in more time and commitment to the sport.

Currently, we boast around 80 USA (year-round) swimmers and swim in two locations, Sussex Academy in Georgetown, DE. And the Milford Boys & Girls Club in Milford, DE.  Our swimmers practice from two to six days a week, Monday-Saturday depending on the age/swim level.  We are the biggest USA Swimming team in Sussex County.

Our youngest group is the MAKO Pups which are typically under 8 and know how to swim but are learning the basic strokes and techniques.  As they develop an understanding of those basics they can move up to the White Group, the Silver Group, the Purple Group and the Blue and Black Groups, which the latter are our highest levels who practice the most days and time.

Our recreational team (SCST) is made up of about 90 swimmers that practice two days a week for about 1.5 hours each day. They swim mostly out of Sussex Academy at the present time.  Normally our recreational team is bigger but current USA Swimming and state mandates limit swimmers to four to a lane for practice.

We belong to Mid-Atlantic Swimming, a division of USA Swimming and includes teams in Delaware, Pennsylvania, New Jersey and southern New York.  Locally we swim several other teams, who also belong to Mid-Atlantic or to Maryland Swimming, which includes teams in Salisbury and Ocean Pines.
