Happy Summer!  We apologize for the length of this newsletter but it is jam packed with info for all!

Thank you: A big THANK YOU to the Y and all of our swimmers, families, coaches, officials, and non-swim team volunteers who once again worked together to host Baker Park’s successful and fun “Out of School -Into the Pool” Invitational this past weekend.  We received several compliments from visiting teams.  Thank you, everyone! It was a great way to kick off our summer and to enjoy such a beautiful morning outside.

Coaches Corner:

  1. Thank you to all parents and volunteers for putting on an excellent Baker Park Invitational.  It was fantastic for me as a coach to be a part of such a well run, well organized, and highly spirited event.  It was great to see so many of the younger swimmers getting to compete for the first or second time, and also to see how strong many of our older swimmers competed.  While there were many outstanding swims, we'd like to recognize swimmers who broke Baker Park Invitational Meet Records.

Congrats to the following swimmers for breaking the Baker Park Invite Meet records:

Aiden McKenrick- Boys 15&O 100 Back

Anya Mostek - Girls 15 & O 100 Free, 100 Back, 100 Breast

George Pappas - Boys 15 & O 100 Back

Jan Perez Bonilla - Boys 15 & O 200 Free

Blaise Sadowski - Boys 12 & U 50 Breast

Matt Truong - Boys 10 & U 25 Breast

Lauren Zelinske - Girls 13-14 100 Back

  1. The Summer Practice Schedule  is on the website- any required changes due to weather or weekend meets will be communicated weekly or as necessary.
  2. PRACTICE CALENDAR NOTES: The practice Calendar for June 24-July 20 is posted on the website. Please note we are sticking with the original schedule sent out with a few modifications to deal with weekend meets.
  3. DRY-LAND – we will be running optional 15-20-minute dry-land sessions after the Gold, Senior, Pre-National, and National AM practices starting Wednesday, June 26.  These will be offered MWF, starting June 26.
  4. We’ve received a few inquiries about Gold swimmers and practice times.  Any Gold swimmer who is unable to make the AM practice time may practice in the evening with Silver from 5:15-6:30 PM.
  5. The schedule for July 22-27 will be modified.  We will send out a practice schedule as soon as we have it available.  For planning purposes, we will have a National Team only practice on Sunday July 21 from 5-7 PM at Baker Park.   Also note that Tri County “A” Champs are on July 22, at BAKER PARK, and Tri County “B” Champs are July 23, at North End.  We will have a schedule out for the week of the 22nd as soon as plans are finalized.
  6. EQUIPMENT NOTE: For Gold, Senior, Pre-National, and National, it’s important they have the required equipment.Much of the work we do is “feel” oriented – and intentional work done using equipment to work on feel helps swimmers amplify their ability to both feel the water and feel particular body movements in the water, especially when they do sets where they are changing equipment at varying stroke rates, which we do frequently. These types of sets are aimed to improve stroke efficiency at varying stroke rates, which directly impact the swimmer’s ability to cover more meters per stroke cycle at a racing stroke rate, which leads to increased velocity, which leads to faster swimming, which is what we want.Swimmers are missing out on this incredibly important detail of training when they do not come to practice prepared with the required equipment.

Baker Park Team Info:

  1. We won our first dual meet against Hillside last Thursday night!  Congratulations to all swimmers who swam—we had many attending their very first swim meet and others who drove 7 hours to participate!  Hurray to all!  Meet results are posted on the league’s website at www.tricountyswim.net and swimmers will have their meet results posted on our website under My Account/Member/Meet Results.  First year swimmers will have results in there soon.

  1. Team T-Shirts and Caps will be handed out during the swim meets if you have not received them yet.
  2. Stroke and Turn Officials – we are looking for more parents to learn how to be officials and to help at the scoring table.  Please email Kate Baganski (kbaganski@verizon.net) to learn more.

All of these jobs can be done by new parents or veteran parents; on the job training.

PAY Swimming:

Zone applications can be found here.  You must apply to Mid Atlantic Swimming for the Zone Team by July 23.  We are working on a practice schedule for Zones, and it is my hope we will be able to run Zone team practices during the week of YMCA Nationals.  It’s very unlikely we will send a PAY Coach to Zones, but MA Swimming does send a Zone coaching staff for swimmers qualifying from our LSC.

The PAY swim-team competed at two Long Course meets the weekend of June 13-16 – one was the Long Course Trials/Finals Meet hosted by Hershey Aquatic Club and West Shore Y at Bucknell University in Lewisburg, PA, and the other was the SVY LC Cup Championship hosted by Sommerset Valley YMCA at Princeton, NJ.  PAY showed strong at both meets, and while there were many strong swims, we’d like to highlight swimmers who posted “AA” times and above!

Odds and Ends:

  1. COINS (or dollars) FOR COACHES FUNDRAISER: Ongoing during our two meets this week.  Every summer the Tri-County swim league selects a charitable organization that they will support.  Each team is asked to participate in this fundraising effort.  This summer the league has chosen to support Gabriella DiDio and A Mother's Wish.  Baker Park will participate and hold a Coins for Coaches fundraiser with all proceeds being contributed to the Tri-County league contribution to A Mother’s Wish. The 3 Baker Park/PAY coaches that collect the highest total amounts in COINS will be winners although paper cash or checks still help our team donation to this non-profit cause.  The winning coaches will be recognized with some fun activity, such as being pied in the face, silly stringed, racing against swimmers, etc.   We may dress the winning coaches up in Hawaiian attire at the Skippack meet!  Collection containers will be available during our swim meets THIS WEEK.  Please bring your coins or dollars to drop in the Coach Jars during the meets.  The jars will be walked around and stationed in our team area during our two away meets.

Our team has raised $145.13 in the jars so far and the top five coin receivers SO FAR are: Coach Colin with $36.95, Coach Kate with $22.16, Coach Dan with $19.94, Coach Darius with $18.31, and Coach Aidan with $12.65

Remember that swimmers can decrease a Coach’s total by contributing dollar bills to a Coach’s container…so if swimmers would like to bring Coach Darius or Coach Aidan up into the top three, they can add dollar bills to Coach Kate or Coach Dan!  Or if our older swimmers want to roast Coach Colin you can add a lot of Coins to Colin’s jar.  Have fun!!! The winning coaches will be announced at the end of this week.

  1. Would your swimmers like to try a fun Triathlon to support Malvern Prep?  Please see the attached flyer and www.malvernprep.org/chasethefriar.  Several PAY swimmers have participated in this fun activity in past years.
