Wilmington Aquatic Club was founded in 1954 by Coach Bob Mattson.  He started the program with 12 swimmers and grew to over 150 swimmers by 1966.  In 1967, he built the Wilmington Swim School in New Castle, and the team took off from there.  WAC, under his direction, produced several Olympians, many world-ranked swimmers, and scores of nationally ranked age group swimmers.  After a short hiatus, Peggy Swiderski, Lindsay (Swiderski) Taggart, and Alicia (Swiderski) Caraballo reinstated Wilmington Aquatic Club in the fall of 2011.  The team has grown from 15 swimmers in 2011 to over 210 swimmers in 2019, and is well on its way to becoming a regional and national force in swimming.
