Dave Guthrie Head Coach & Director of Swimming

This will be Coach Dave's eleventh year as the Head Coach and Director of Swimming for the Manitoba Marlins. Coach Dave’s personal coaching philosophy fits closely with the Marlins’ mission statement, “implementing a high performance competitive swim program that provides athletes an environment to systematically progress from the novice to elite levels of competition. Through this progression we empower young people to be CHAMPIONS in life through EXCELLENCE in swimming”. Dave has worked with all levels of swimmers, from the early developmental to national athletes and has broad experience, working with clubs ranging from thirty swimmers to two hundred swimmers. As a former Marlins swimmer (1981-1986) Coach Dave has deep appreciation for the Club’s rich history. Coach Dave views the Manitoba Marlins Head Coach position as an opportunity to be part of an ambitious, forwarding thinking organization and lead the team to new levels of achievement and development. Coach Dave feels blessed to have the opportunity to give back to the organization that played such a large part of his life as a young swimmer. Dave coaches the National and National Prep groups and works closely with all of our coaches to develop an integrated coaching philosophy and templated teaching strategy. Coach Dave truly believes the Marlins have one of the best coaching staffs (top to bottom) in the country.

In 1999 Wendy returned to coaching as an assistant coach with the Manitoba Marlins and in the fall of 2002, took the Head Coach position at the St. James Seals Swim Club. In the fall of 2008, Wendy returned to the Manitoba Marlins in the role of Assistant Head Coach. Throughout her coaching career, Wendy has consistently demonstrated her passion for the sport, and her commitment to the growth and success of swimming in Manitoba, through her involvement with the MSCA and Manitoba Team, and through her work with the CSCTA as a Skills Coach course facilitator and assessor. Over the years, Wendy has consistently developed athletes to the Age Group National level. She has demonstrated that she is an effective leader with the coaching skills and administrative experience necessary to achieve excellence within the sport of swimming in Manitoba.

Emily Duncan Assistant Coach (AGE)

This season will be my 4th full season with the Marlins.  Time really flies! After moving to Manitoba for university, I found the Marlins while searching for the culture of team in my new home city.  I couldn’t have been luckier as what started as a search for a community turned into a place to learn and develop into a coach as well. I feel privileged to contribute to the development of our young athletes in sport, character, and life.  When I am not at the pool I enjoy running, trying new foods, environmentalism, and my career as an ASL-Engish interpreter.

Mackenzie Alexiuk Assistant Coach (AGD)

I began swimming with the Manitoba Marlins when I was 6 years old, and swam with the club for 10 years (2005-2015). During the last years of my competitive swimming career, I did some coaching as a substitute for the Mini Marlins Swim School Program. After officially hanging up my own cap and goggles, I coached Mini Marlins for three years, and helped run various Manitoba Marlins Summer Swim Camps. The three years I spent with the Mini Marlins re-ignited my love for the sport. After completing my first year of university, I took a year off and worked as an Au Pair in Paris, France.  Upon my return home to Winnipeg, I took on the role as the AGD coach; and I have been enjoying every minute of it. When I am not coaching, I am a full time student at the University of Manitoba studying Biology and French, with aspirations of a career in the health sciences.

Emma Hansen Assistant Coach (Super Squad)

I started swimming with the Marlins when I was about 7 years old. From then I went on to swim competitively for nearly ten years. When I was 15 I first started to volunteer with the Mini Marlins and in my last two years of high school (2012-2013) I became a Minis coach myself. For five years I've been coaching Levels 1 and 2 of the Mini Marlins Swim School and have spent several summers working the Marlins Summer Camps. While teaching the fundamentals has been an absolutely amazing experience I am ecstatic to begin coaching in competitive groups! Currently I am taking a year off of a Fine Arts Degree at the University of Manitoba and one day hopefully pursuing a career in animation. In my spare time I volunteer with adoptions at the Winnipeg Humane Society. I'm so excited to begin this new swim season and am so grateful for the opportunities that swimming and working with the Marlins has given me!

Hannah Molloy Assistant Coach (MSG)

I swam with the Manitoba Marlins for 13 years before I graduated and swam Varsity at the University of Calgary for one year. In my 14 years of swimming, I swam at a national level, participating in meets such as Canada Summer Games 2013 and Age Group Nationals. I am now a student at the University of Manitoba working towards a BA in Linguistics. As well as coaching, I work as the Marketing and Communications coordinator for Swim Manitoba. I coached Mini Marlins last year as a substitute coach and I'm really looking forward to coaching a competitive group this year!
