What is YMCA Swimming?

SPY has been a member of the Chesapeake and Potomac (C&P) YMCA Swim League since 1976. The C&P League consists of about 15 teams, divided into 3 geographic divisions.

The YMCA Short Course Season: September through April.

Based on the swimmer's age as of December 1

  • Dual Meets

  • C&P League Championships, in which all swimmers can participate

  • District Championships, in which qualifying times apply (Maryland, Delaware, Northern Virginia)

  • Invitational Meets and Open Competitions (like the Capital Classic in Raleigh, NC)

  • YMCA National Championships, often held in Florida and in which rigorous qualifying times apply.

The YMCA Long Course Season: April Through August

Based on the swimmer's age as of May 1

  • No dual meets

  • 3 or 4 USA or YMCA Long Course Meets, both in state and out of state

  • YMCA National Championships in early August.

  1. Swimmers must have swum 2 or more Long Course meets.

  2. Rigorous qualifying times apply.

Additionally, it is SPY's policy that a swimmer must qualify in at least two individual events to attend Long Course Y Nationals. Exceptions may be granted by the coaching staff.
