Welcome to the Smoky Hill Sharks!

Our goal and responsibility is to provide a safe learning environment for the swimmers. If the coaches, feel the pool is unsafe for any reason they have the discretion to cancel practice, see policy below. Please remember the decisions are made for the safety of your children however the team and coaches are liable so be respectful of the decisions.

Practice or Meet Cancellation Policy

Purpose: Under certain conditions, it is the responsibility of swim coaches, Board members and facility to cancel all swimming activities for the safety of the swimmers, staff and spectators. The following is an overview of the Smoky Hill Sharks Swim Team practice or meet cancellation policy.

Inclement weather:

  1. In the case of thunder, the swimming pool will be closed of ½ hour (30 minutes) upon hearing the event.
  2. In the case of lightning, the swimming pool will be closed of ½ hour (30 minutes) upon seeing the event.
  3. In the case of severe weather, the pool will be closed

Swimming pools are connected to a much larger surface area via underground water pipes, gas lines, electric and telephone wiring, etc. Lightning strikes to the ground anywhere on this metallic network may induce shocks elsewhere.

Air and water temperature:

  1. In the case that the air temperature falls below 55 degrees Fahrenheit, the swim coaches or Board members have the due prudence to cancel all swimming activities.
  2. In the case that the water temperature falls below 75 degrees Fahrenheit, the swim coaches or Board members have the due prudence to cancel all swimming activities.

Cold water can become dangerous very fast. In water the body wicks away heat faster than in air. Any swimmer exhibiting any signs of hypothermia will be asked to exit the water.

Air quality:

  1. Air quality will be monitored according to the Country, State and Local Health Department Guidelines.

At any given time if a parent feels that any of the conditions are not safe for their child, the swimmer(s) can be removed from the pool without prejudice.

Swim meet specific:

The safety of the swimmers is the responsibility of the Meet Referee. Once the meet has begun, the Meet Referee may call a meet in the event of cold or inclement weather. The League strongly recommends that the Meet Referee include the Parent Delegates and Coaches from each team in the decision making process for early termination of a dual meet due to unsafe conditions. Any decision made will follow the MHSL and Smoky Hill Sharks Swim Team policies and procedures.

Safety of our swimmers, staff and parents is a priority for the Smoky Hill Sharks Swim Team.
