DIRECTIONS TO MAKE MASKS

To complete a mask, you will need: Bias Tape/elastic/some form of binding, 100% cotton, Scissors, Iron, Ironing Board, Sewing Machine, Thread, Washer, Dryer.

Step 1 – Cut fabric into Rectangles

Equipment needed: Washing Machine, Dryer, Scissors, Iron, Ironing Board, 100% Cotton Fabric, attached pattern

Description: You will cut the rectangles following the attached pattern. Each mask requires two rectangles.

How to do it:

  1. Wash fabric in washing machine on HOT
  2. Dry fabric on HOT
  3. Iron fabric so that it is flat
  4. Using cut out pattern outline rectangles on fabric starting at one corner and working across the fabric.
  5. Stack rectangles on top of each other.

Step 2 – Make/Cut Bias Tape or Cut Elastic


Equipment Needed: Washing Machine, Dryer, Scissors, Iron, Ironing Board, 100% Cotton Fabric

Description: You will make straps that will be sewn onto a mask during assembly. No Sewing is required.

How to do it for Bias Tape:

  1. Wash all fabric on HOT
  2. Dry all fabric on HOT
  3. Iron all fabric flat
  4. Cut fabric into strips that are 36” long at 1.5” wide. If your bias tape is pre-made just cut 36” long and stop here.
  5. Fold ¼ inch of both edges in and iron.  The strip should now be ½ inch wide and 36 inches long
  6. Fold in half again and iron. The strip should now be about a ¼ inch wide and 36 inches long.

How to do it for Elastic:

  1. Wash all Elastic on HOT
  2. Dry all Elastic on HOT
  3. Cut elastic into pieces that are ¼” wide and 7” long

Step 3 – Assemble Mask


Equipment Needed: Bias Tape, Rectangles, Scissors, Iron, Ironing Board, Sewing Machine, Thread, Washer, Dryer.
 

Description: You will be taking all the parts of the mask and assembling them. This pattern was made for hospital nurses originally. The DPD does not want a nose pocket. Please ignore the nose pocket outline at the top of the page.

How to do make mask with Bias Tape:

  1. Sew ¼ inch hem on bottom of two rectangles
  2. Cut stings
  3. Put rectangles right sides together and pin
  4. Sew the remaining three sides together
  5. Cut strings
  6. Turn the right sides inside out
  7. Pleat rectangles using the pattern or attached video. Pin pleats into place.
  8. Pin bias tape to either side of the mask to that there are 16 inches on each side.
  9. Sew pleats and bias tape into place.
  10. Reinforce bias tape and mask connection by sewing over it 2-3 times.
  11. Cut all strings
  12. Wash on HOT
  13. Dry on HOT

How to do make mask with Elastic:

  1. Sew ¼ inch hem on bottom of two rectangles
  2. Cut stings
  3. Place one rectangle right side up and pin elastic to both sides about 1.5 inches from bottom hem (see video)
  4. Put second rectangle on top of the rectangle with the elastic pinned to it, right sides together and pin.
  5. Sew the remaining three sides together
  6. Cut strings
  7. Turn the right sides inside out
  8. Pleat rectangles using the pattern or attached video. Pin pleats into place.
  9. Sew pleats into place and reinforce by sewing over seam 2-3 times.
  10. Cut all strings
  11. Wash on HOT
  12. Dry on HOT

Jordan has found it easier if she works in batches. What this means is she gets about 15 masks going at a time and gets all 15 done with step #1 before moving on to step #2. This way you don’t have to keep your iron on all the time.
