Information: Education & Certification Requirements Reminder

Joe Gazzarato

Club leaders – please share the below important message with your membership. Thank you!

Members of Michigan Swimming:

As competitions ramp-up this month, we wanted to remind you that you must complete and be current in all education and certification requirements of membership at all times to engage in USA Swimming and Michigan Swimming activities, including practice and competition. You are only considered in good standing when your USA Swimming-issued membership card reflects this status.

We are aware that some members are completing requirements, but completion isn’t registering in SWIMS 3.0 and showing on the membership card. In these situations, manual resolution is required and takes time. Unfortunately, we are not able to expedite that process. Complete your education and certification requirements early – even earlier than you ordinarily would – to provide a buffer in case manual resolution is required.

If you believe you met one or more of the below requirements, but completion is not reflected on your member record:

  • Athlete Protection Training: Ensure you “completed” the course by clicking the “Submit” button at the end. Download your completion certificate and submit a ticket at https://swimssupport.usaswimming.org/ (main issue: "Good Standing Questions", sub issue: "Course requirements not updating") with your full name, club affiliation, member ID number, and attach your completion certificate. USA Swimming must manually update your completion status; Michigan Swimming cannot update this or expedite with USA Swimming.

  • Other USA Swimming e-Learning Courses: Download your completion certificate or other evidence of course completion and e-mail [email protected] with your full name, club affiliation, member ID number, which course you are requesting credit for, and attach your evidence of course completion. USA Swimming must manually update your completion status; Michigan Swimming cannot update this or expedite with USA Swimming.

  • Lifeguarding / STSC / CPR / AED / CPT: Send your completion certificate to [email protected] during normal business hours, as in the past. Michigan Swimming updates your completion status for these items. It may take up to 24 hours for SWIMS 3.0 to register this change and update your membership card. Michigan Swimming cannot expedite this.

Until your USA Swimming-issued membership card shows that you are in good standing – showing all gold with a check mark next to your role – you are not in good standing and cannot participate in USA Swimming or Michigan Swimming activities, even if you otherwise believe you have met all requirements of membership. You are not permitted to show course certificates or other evidence of requirement completion at practice or competition as a substitute.

The only source of truth for evidence of good standing is the USA Swimming-issued membership card. Meet hosts must check each non-athlete member’s USA Swimming-issued membership card for good standing status – including verifying that the good standing date is beyond the last date of competition – before granting access to the pool deck. Athlete good standing will be cleared in the pre-meet recon process; meet hosts must check any athlete’s USA Swimming-issued membership card for good standing status who is listed as an error in the recon or who deck enters at the competition before granting access to the pool deck or seeding the athlete in heats.

Engaging in USA Swimming and / or Michigan Swimming activities when not in good standing is a violation of USA Swimming and Michigan Swimming rules. USA Swimming and Michigan Swimming take this very seriously. Individual members and clubs may face disciplinary action – up to and including fines and suspension of membership – for violations.

If you have questions, please contact the Michigan Swimming Office ([email protected]).

Thank you.
