Coaches

Head Coach Buffy Hall: 

Coach Hall swam for the Midland Dolphins for 10 years. She has been coaching for almost 30 years. She coaches the Midland High Girls Swim Team and the Jefferson Girls Swim Team.  In addition to coaching Dolphins in the summer,  Coach Hall manages and coaches at the Midland Country Club where she has worked for 37 years.  Coach Hall graduated from the University of Michigan with a degree in art education.  She has been teaching elementary art for 24 years for Midland Public Schools. 

Assistant Coach Susie Soderberg: 

Coach Susie is a USA Registered Swim Coach who has been with the Midland Dolphins since 2017. She has coached various levels on and off in her time with the club. Coach Susie has a deep history with the Midland Dolphins, starting off as an age group swimmer with the team, assisting with lessons, and coaching beginner swimmers as a young adult, to now a part time coach with the Dolphins.  Currently, five of her eight children are swimming with the program.  Coach Susie is passionate about swimming, not only as a sport but as a life saving skill that all children should have the opportunity to learn. Outside of the pool Susie likes to spend time with her family and stay active outdoors.

Assistant Coach Andrea DuBois: 

Coach Andrea swam on the Jefferson Swim Team and the Dow High Swim Team.  She has been coaching for the Midland Dolphins for four years.  Coach Andrea manages and coaches at the Midland Country Club with Coach Hall where she has worked for 37 years.  She is an  English at Bullock Creek High School.  Coach Andrea will coach most days at the Greater Midland Community Center.

Assistant Coach Anna McGee: 

Coach Anna swam for Midland Dolphins and Midland High School. She graduated from Central Michigan University and is a Speech-Language Pathologist for Saginaw Public Schools. Outside of the pool, Anna enjoys traveling, being outside, and spending time with her family, friends, and dog Wrigley. 

Assistant Coach Lauren Hall: 

Coach Lauren swam for the Midland Dolphins from ages 5 to 18. She graduated from Albion College in 2019 and swam on the swim team all four years. Her favorite stroke to swim and coach is breaststroke. Outside of the pool she is a high school Spanish teacher.

Assistant Coach Claire Fries: 

Coach Claire Fries grew up in Frankfort, IL where she began competitive swimming at age 6. Moving to Michigan in 2017 to attend Central Michigan University, Claire joined the Midland Community by coaching the Dow High Boys Swim team in the 2019-2020 season. Claire is now the head coach of Dow High Boys Swim, interim head coach of Dow High Girls Swim, and teaches Psychology at Dow High. When she is not at Dow High (yes, she does leave!), Claire enjoys spending time Up North and throwing around a tennis ball with her energetic puppy, Rex.

Assistant Coach Tyler Miller: 

Coach Miller is from Saginaw Michigan where he swam for the Heritage Hawks and Saginaw Valley State University Cardinals. He will be graduating from SVSU this spring with a bachelor’s degree in psychology. Right now spends his time coaching both varsity teams at Heritage High School. Outside of the pool area, Tyler likes to workout and spend time with his friends and family. 

Assistant Coach Emily Kreusch 

Coach Emily will be joining our coaching staff this fall.  Emily is a senior at CMU.  Emily worked at the Midland Country Club Pool for seven years and this year she worked for the City of Midland and found herself working at Plymouth Pool!  Emily swam on the Midland High Swim Team.  Emily will coach most days at Northeast Middle School with Coach Anna.

Assistant Coach Will Gaal 

Coach Will is joining our coaching staff this fall.  He is a senior at Dow High.  Will lifeguards and teaches lessons at the Midland Country Club pool in the summer.  In addition to enjoying swimming, Will loves to ski.  In the winter you might find will at Snow Snake doing ski patrol.  Coach Will is going to coach at GMCC with Coach Andrea.

Board

President Laura Gray: 

Laura and her husband, Brad, are the parents of 3 Dolphin swimmers. Laura joined the board in 2017. She became the Vice President in 2019 and President in 2020. Laura and her family are from Texas, where her oldest daughter was first introduced to competitive swimming through their neighborhood summer swim team. They quickly found the Midland Dolphins when they moved to Midland in 2014 and have been active supporters of the team ever since. 

Vice President Craig Austin (He/Him): 

Craig is a former college, HS, and youth swimmer. He has 16 years of experience on non-profit youth sports operating boards and coaching and has held numerous positions including coach, member at large, youth advocate, coach administrator, VP, and Regional Commissioner.  What he really likes to do is coach, to see the smiling faces when learners accomplish a new goal or have fun learning a new skill that they are challenged with. Craig works for Dow, is married to Jennifer Austin (She/Her), and has 5 perfectly amazing children.

Secretary Kris Kurzer:

Although Kris wasn't a swimmer himself, he's fallen in love with the sport as a parent of one. Being a part of the Dolphins, he's watched his son Ransom grow into a stronger and more confident person. We've found our swim family with this incredibly supportive and close knit group. Besides being the Board Secretary, Kris works as a Field Representative for The U.S. Census Bureau. He's also an avid reader, music lover, and proud owner of a large comic book collection.

Treasurer Julie Wolf:

Julie Wolf is a parent of a Midland Dolphins USA competitive swimmer.  She is not a swimmer herself but rather rides barrel horses competitively.  She has been a lifelong resident of Midland and is a Dow High alumni.  She holds a dual Bachelors degree in Marketing and Management from Northwood University and Masters degree from Central Michigan University.  She retired from Dow Chemical and is now a stay at home Mom and enjoys being a volunteer and involved in her daughter's academics and athletic ambitions.

Athlete Representative Will Gaal:

Will is a junior at Dow High who has been swimming for 7 years as part of the Dolphins, the middle school, and high school swim teams. He enjoys skiing and is training to become part of the Ski Patrol at Snow Snake. During the summer, he works as a lifeguard at the Country Club. He loves to wear bright, colorful pants, and much to his disappointment, he is only missing one color - pink.

I live in Midland with my husband, Jay, and two daughters. Audrey is 8 years old and has been swimming with the Dolphins for 2 years. Erica is 4 and still learning to swim and will hopefully join the Dolphins when she’s ready. I am a Speech Language Pathologist and work for the Midland County ESA and I really enjoy working with the birth to 3 and preschool aged population.
