Our Coaches


Julie Stone - Head Coach and Senior Silver/Gold Lead  

 Coach Julie grew up in Minnesota Swimming.  She swam competitively for 13 years with the SEMS Swim Club, Woodbury High School, and the University of Minnesota. She was a Junior National Qualifier, team captain, 6 time Varsity letter winner, school record holder, 4 time Section Champion, All-Conference, and All-State honors recipient. She taught swimming lessons all through high school and college, and graduated from the U of M with a degree in Mechanical Engineering.  After working several years in that field she decided to return to her true passions:  being at the pool and working with kids.  She started with the Hurricanes as an assistant coach in 1999, has experience working with every age group, and has coached multiple State Champions, Zone Champions, and Junior National qualifiers.  Her favorite part of coaching is helping swimmers at all levels reach beyond their comfort zone, surprise themselves, and accomplish things they didn't know they could.  These days when she's not coaching she still enjoys swimming, running, camping, and photography.  She and her husband TJ have three children who all currently swim with the Hurricanes.



Tom Dahl - Senior Silver/Gold Lead

Coach Tom's swimming experience dates back to age 5, swimming for the Hurricanes for many of his age-group years and continuing to swim through college! He was a captain for Hopkins High School and UW Eau Claire, earning All-Conference, All-State, and All-American honors in high school. This is Coach Tom's 8th year with the Hurricanes and 3rd year leading the Cyclones group. Coach Tom is a graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire where he studied Human Resource Management and Professional Sales. He works full time in sales and lives in the Maple Grove area.




Michael Duncan - Senior Bronze Lead

Coach Michael started swimming at the age of 7 for the Terre Haute Torpedoes in Terre Haute, Indiana before moving to Fargo, ND/Moorhead, MN. There, he competed in swimming and diving at the club and high school levels. To this day, he still enjoys competing at meets on occasion. Michael started coaching in 2012, and has worked with 7 different teams, including high school, club, and college teams with athletes in all age groups. After the 2016 Long Course season, Michael moved to Minneapolis, and began coaching with the Hurricanes in September. Michael’s main goal as a coach is to help the athletes he works with develop to have success as swimmers, as students, and as members of their communities. Outside the pool, Michael enjoys going for walks, drawing, and listening to music. He has a Bachelor’s Degree in Studio Art from North Dakota State University, with minors in Gender Studies and Sociology.






Sarah Vrudny - Cyclones Lead

Coach Sarah has been in the water since age 4! She grew up in a small town in Colorado and swam on a club team during the summer, named, get this, the Cyclones! She was a part of the first ever High School swim team starting her sophomore year, helping lead the team as a captain, setting initial records, and establishing a foundation for the sport in rural Colorado. Sarah attended St. Kate’s for nursing school. She swam all four years mainly swimming sprint freestyle events, but also competed in the 200 breaststroke and 200 IM. She was captain her junior and senior years, received All-Conference honors for sportsmanship, and set some new team records. Coach Sarah currently works as a school nurse at Echo Park Elementary School in the Eagan/Rosemount/Apple Valley district. This is her 2nd year coaching with the Hurricanes. She loves to do photography and hang out with family and friends during her free time!




Todd Wallace - Gust/Gales Lead            

Coach Todd started swimming competitively at the age of 5 with Hopkins Swim Club at the same pools he coaches at now. Swimming has always been a part of his life living at the pool at a young age and then swimming High School at Eden Prairie. Coach Todd continued swimming in college for 4 years at University of Minnesota-Mankato where Coach Todd graduated with a major in Physical Education and a minor in athletic coaching. Todd has coached swim teams at Wayzata Country Club, Mankato YMCA, Aquajets, and Life Time Fitness.  Todd enjoys playing and watching all kinds of sports. His favorite sport to watch is college football where he is a passionate follower of the Alabama Crimson Tide. ROLL TIDE!  






Jen Holmquist - Lead Coach PreTeam, Whirlwinds, and Breeze/Blast  

Coach Jen began swimming before she could walk. She grew up in Osceola Wisconsin where they unfortunately did not have a swim team. Instead of swimming, in high school she was the MVP and Captain of the Dance Team. At the University of Wisconsin-River Falls, Jen continued to dance and was elected President of the dance team. Jen's background in coaching includes GMMO Swim Team, the YMCA Ridgedale Tidal Waves and the Hopkins Hurricanes. In addition, Jen has great experience teaching swim lessons and working in aquatics. While she loves all ages, she particularly enjoys the 3-8 year olds. Outside of swimming Jen is the Minneapolis Golf Club Pool Director, has a Bachelor's Degree in Counseling and Psychology, and she is pursuing a Master's Degree in Counseling. Jen loves to bike, Rollerblade, kick-box and longs to live by the ocean. 






Joe Vrudny - All Groups  


Coach Joe's competitive swimming career began at Brainerd High School, where he was a multi-time all-state and all-American.  He continued swimming at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque, where he was a multi-time all-conference swimmer.  Coach Joe brings a lot of coaching experience, including Brainerd High School, Wayzata High School, Mach III Flyers and his four years with the Hurricanes.  When Coach Joe isn't coaching or swimming, he teaches second grade in the the Wayzata School District.  In his free time he enjoys fishing, biking and spending time at his rustic cabin up in the north woods.





Kyle Rozendaal - Gust/Gales, Senior Bronze

Coach Kyle's competitive swimming experience dates back to when he was 7 years old and  swimming for the Willmar Aquatic Racing Stingrays. From there he went on to swim for the  Willmar Senior High School Cardinals for six years, during which time he competed individually at the  state meet, became team captain, and still holds the school record for the 100 yard backstroke. From  there he attended Wheaton College where he swam and graduated with a degree in Media  Studies and Journalism. Kyle started his coaching career working with the Willmar Senior High  girls team as a volunteer coach and started working with the Hurricanes in December 2016. Outside  of coaching Kyle continues to swim and compete in open water swims during the summer, he  enjoys cycling, filming videos, and spending time with his wife and daughter.

Nicole Freeman - Breeze/Blasts, Whirlwinds, Senior Bronze

Coach Nicole started swimming at the age of 6 for the Rochester Swim Club and went on to swim for the University of Wisconsin Eau Claire for four years.  In college she swam distance events and the 400 IM.  Since graduating from college Coach Nicole coached four years at the La Crosse YMCA and the Rochester Swim Club Orcas.  This is her third year with the Hurricanes.  Coach Nicole is putting to use her BS in Kinesiology and Masters in Therapeutic Recreation at her job as an Aquatic and Fitness Specialist at Courage Kenny Rehabilitation Institute in Golden Valley.  When not coaching or working, Coach Nicole enjoys participating in Triathalons, baking and spending time with family and friends.





Elena Patz -  Seniors 

Coach Elena started swimming competitively in summer rec league when she was 7 years old. She then continued to swim for Waunakee Wave and competed all four years for Waunakee High School (Waunakee, WI). She was an individual club state champion in the 200 fly, and made All-State in the 100 fly her senior year of high school. She then competed for Ohio University for 4 years, graduating in May 2018. She specialized in the 200 fly, where she made the conference championship team all 4 years and the Canadian Olympic Trials in 2016. She also was named captain her senior year. She graduated with a degree in Exercise Physiology and is currently pursuing her Doctor of Physical Therapy at the University of Minnesota. When she's not studying or working, she loves spending time with family, exploring the Twin Cities, and cheering on her favorite teams:  the Boston Red Sox and (sorry!) the Green Bay Packers.

Stacy Backstrom - All Groups

I started swimming at in 7th grade and swam thorough high school and college. Coach Stacy attended Gustavus Adolphus College for 4 years. In college she swam freestyle events including the 50, 100, 200, and 500. Since graduating college Coach Stacy coached all swimming levels at Edina Country Club and still coaches the Maple Grove Girls Swim and Dive Team (this is her 4th season with MG). This is Coach Stacy's first year with the Hurricanes. Coach Stacy has an undergraduate degree in health and exercise sciences and masters in education. Coach Stacy is a high school physical education teacher at Maple Grove Senior High School. When Coach Stacy is not on the pool deck she enjoys spending time with her friends and family, fall weather, coffee, running, and football!
